Kings’ Slide A Mystery To Jong

BARANGAY Ginebra Kings’ coach Jong Uichico is at a loss on what’s happening to his team, following the loss of another seemingly won game against the Magnolia Beverage Masters before a huge crowd at the Araneta Coliseum on Sunday.

“We are in the game, then all of a sudden we lose close games,” said Uichico in a conversation with Viva Sports/Standard Today. “The coaching staff had some observations. I don’t know what’s happening.”

Ginebra fans have observed that import Eric Brown is one of the reasons for the collapse, since he is too slow and not dominating despite being a seven-footer.

“He [Brown] gets tired in the end. When we really need him in the endgame he is not there,” said Uichico.

Even in the previous game against Coca-Cola, the Coke import Jason Dixon had his way in the end.

The Ginebra coach said he didn’t want to get a replacement merely for the sake of getting one. “We need to know if he can really help.”

But Ginebra scouts were reportedly looking at Chris Alexander, a 7’1” center from Iowa State and who plays for the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBA Developmental League. Alexander, whose nationality is Spanish, averaged 11.6 points, 11.2 rebounds and 2.0 shot blocks in the 2007-2008 season for Sioux Falls and may be what the PBA’s most popular team needs to pull it out of its present rut.

Uichico admitted he felt ashamed that Ginebra was now in the cellar with a 0-5 slate after the Welcoat Dragons slew fancied Purefoods for their first win. However, he praised his locals for trying their best, despite failing to win even one game so far.

The absence of Eric Menk with a calf injury has also hurt Ginebra even though Uichico commended Alex Crisano and Billy Mamaril. Ronnie Nathanielsz
