Panzer Sound-tank - Futuristic Sound System from Germany

Nik Nowak is a designer from Germany who decided to name his futuristic sound system Panzer, after the famous tank that brought fear during the Second World War.

The giant sound system, dubbed Panzer "Sound-tank" is anything but usual - it is fully mobile and uses a continuous track belt for movement.

On the outside the system resembles the German tank. However, instead of weapons the mobile sound tank features 11 speakers mounted in different parts of the vehicle's body.

The turret of the system is flexible, being able to play the role of a sheltering component which one can open to reveal all sound related circuitry indoors.

Inside there's a seating arrangement for the driver/disc jockey. The seats are located in the rear section of the vehicle. In such a way the driver obtains full view of the surroundings.

HAV - Airships for Quick and Efficient Delivery of Goods to Remote Regions

A newly-established firm decided to focus its attention on building helium-fueled airships that can deliver heavy loads more efficiently and in a short amount of time.

The blimps can be used to transport for example a container of milk or orange juice, which are very precious goods in remote areas. It could become an efficient and less expensive means of transportation, says Discovery Air Innovations.

Recently the company teamed up with Hybrid Air Vehicles to create a hybrid air vehicle (HAV) able to lift heavy loads. The first airship is expected to be produced by 2014. It would be an ultra-light flying vehicle able to carry about 50 tons. In addition, the vehicle will be able to take off and land from virtually any time of surface, be it water, snow or ice.

It would be worth mentioning that the HAV is fueled by non-flammable helium, which means that it is going to used much less energy than traditional aircrafts.

    World's First Manned Electric Helicopter

Pascal Chretien, an electrical and aerospace engineer managed to develop the world's first manned helicopter powered entirely by electricity. On August 12th, the engineer carried out the fist test flight that lasted 2 minutes and 1o seconds.

The most interesting, however, is the fact that the helicopter was designed and built by Chretien alone. In order to create his DIY electric helicopter, the designer required 12 months.

It is worth mentioning that so far electric vehicles did not make it onto the market due to the fact that the flight dynamics of such a machine requires a lot of energy, which traditional batteries cannot provide.

While electric planes need a lot of energy in the take of phase, helicopters require strong energy delivery during the take off, flying and landing phases. Thus, it was a great challenge for Pascal Chretien when Solution F, a firm based in France, asked him to create the first manned electric helicopter.

The main things that Pascal had in mind were ultra-light design and powerful batteries. He came up with a number of innovations that brought him closer to accomplishing the mission. The frame of his helicopter was made from 7020 aluminum tubing. The French company wanted a helicopter that could stay in the air from about 10 minutes.

Chretien used rechargeable lithium ion polymer pouch cells that boast an energy density of 160 watt-hours per kg. In the end the engineer delivered a manned electric helicopter can performed a test flight. Although he did not reach the required standard of 10 minutes established by Solution F, Chretien decided to make a number of modifications that would allow him to meet the target of 10 minutes

System that Produces Electricity from Vehicle Speeding on Highways

Today we can already observe highways that make use of kinetic energy to produce electricity. But designer Fang-Chun Tsai has come up with another original idea - to use kinetic energy from vehicles passing on magnetic highways to change a magnetic field to produce power.

The designer says that the Magneter system is quite easy to mount in existing vehicles. The technology could lead to the development of a self-sufficient energy grid.

Here's how the system works: cars equipped with a magnetic device located on the underside of the chassis run across the road and charge an energy-producing device that would be mounted on the road.

There's no need to use a generator and the system would produce power from whatever systems requiring it. In addition, the invention could be used to produce electricity on rail and subway lines as well.

It would also be interesting to note that the system would function together with a Smart Grid. It allows power to be stored and redirected to areas when it is required during peak power times.

Sphero - Ball Controlled via Smartphone

A lot of interesting products have been unveiled at this year's CES that took place in Las Vegas but the one that caught somewhat more attention was a ball developed by Orbotix, a firm based in Colorado.

The company's gadget, called Sphero, is anything but a usual call (obviously) - it is in fact a self-propelled rolling ball that one can remotely control using a special application for smartphones, both iOS and Android-running. To control the ball the handsets have to activate their Bluetooth feature.

The ball is made of see-through white polycarbonate shell and inside users will be able to observe a glowing LED light that can take one of a thousands of colors, depending on user's taste. The device can be charged if placed in an induction charger.

Apart from the standard touch-based directional controls that allow the user to move the ball forward, backward, left and right, the gadget features an on-screen "boost" button. This button gives the ball a burst of power so it could climb over various obstacles like carpet edges.

The company launched the Sphero together with several games, including Sphero Drive and Sphero Golf. In the near future Orbotic plans to launch a number of other games, some of which could involve augmented reality.

Dyson Hot - New-Gen Heater that Doubles as Cooling Fan

The famous British Industrial designer James Dyson has recently presented its brand new device called Dyson Hot, which represents a bladeless space heater. The gadget can fill the room with hot air much quicker than conventional space heaters. It can also play the role of a fan to cool the space during hot days.

The new device from James Dyson is much safer and cleaner than a traditional space heater. The opening in the heater has low surface temperatures and it doesn't gather a lot of dust and there are no grilles that can sometimes trap debris and as a result catch fire.

Using heat detecting technology, the new heater can be set to a desired temperature and it turns off when the set temperature is reached. Then, after the temperature drops, the device automatically turns on.

The Dyson Hot also boasts automatic thermostat and easy-to-use remote control and it automatically deactivates in case it is knocked over. All in all, the device saves you money and energy.

Ball Camera You Can Throw in the Air to Make Panoramic Images

Jonas Pfeil, a computer engineer who graduated from the Technical University of Berlin, teamed up with a group of likeminded people to make the process of taking pictures more entertaining.

The team managed to come up with a "ball" camera. Their foam-covered spherical device measures 8 inches in diameter and is equipped with 36 small 2-megapixel cameras, which are usually used in mobile phones.

When the user throws the round camera in the air, the accelerometer inside the device begins analyzing the altitude and when the camera has reached the highest point it starts taking pictures. In the end the user gets beautiful and accurate panoramic images.

In order to view the 72-megapixel pictures, it is required to connect the device to a spherical panoramic viewer via USB (the viewer comes with the camera). Pictures resemble those on Google Street View. They can also be zoomed and rotated to observe all the details.

It would be interesting to note that the multi-faceted casing of the ballcam was manufactured with the help of a 3D printer. Inside the device, besides the camera and accelerometer, one will be able to find 2 Atmel microcontrollers that sync up and manage all 32 cameras.

Due to the fact that most of the components used to make the ball camera are rather expensive, it is possible that the device could cost like mid-range digital cameras when it hits the market.

The ball camera is expected to be officially unveiled at SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 that will take place this December.
