I'm definitely up for funding CERN. At least it's for a cause I know about. Besides, the funding CERN gets is an apostrophe next to what the Catholic Church receives. Not bashing or anything like that, but if they sold stuff inside St. Peters Basilica, the money they would get in return would be mind-blowing.

Anyway, I agree with Stephen Hawking. It'd be crazy exciting if they didn't find the Higgs Boson. Back to square one.

Nope, not exactly "square one"...it simply means that the entire concept of the Higgs Particle is wrong--it simple has to be re-assessed and try to figure out why it couldn't be detected by the LHC--the formula is elegant, and just one thing amiss is too far off the statistical scale to be considered as "something that would make everything go back to square one."

Well not exactly "square one" per se, but it'd definitely be a speed bump of sorts.

LHC Out of Commission for At Least Two Months
CERN: Damage to new collider forces 2-month halt
By ALEXANDER G. HIGGINS – 1 day ago

"GENEVA (AP) — The world's largest atom smasher — which was launched with great fanfare earlier this month — has been damaged worse than previously thought and will be out of commission for at least two months, its operators said Saturday.

Experts have gone into 17-mile (27-kilometer) circular tunnel housing the Large Hadron Collider under the Swiss-French border to examine the damage that halted operations about 36 hours after its Sept. 10 startup, said James Gillies, spokesman for CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

"It's too early to say precisely what happened, but it seems to be a faulty electrical connection between two magnets that stopped superconducting, melted and led to a mechanical failure and let the helium out," Gillies told The Associated Press."

    nice articles. amazing device.

but if any of you have read the book Rule Of Four one of the philosopher characters there retorted that a a particle collider is akin to a child breaking a clock just to see its contents.

IMHO, This is created to recreate the Big-Bang Theory which is another scientific story proposed by Scientists/Physicists on the how the world was created. For me, I am a strong proponent on the natural theory of creation. Whatever the result is, my conviction stays the same. But as far as science is concerned this is gonna be a great breakthrough that will rock the world upside down.
