ABS-CBN withdraws; Solar Sports remains front-runner
Saturday, May 24, 2008
Solar Sports, a TV outfit which features among others NBA games, stellar boxing cards and big billiards events, may have firmed up its bid to gain the exclusive PBA broadcast rights with ABS-CBN withdrawing its proposal to cover the PBA games starting next season.
ABS-CBN announced its withdrawal yesterday, 24 hours after the PBA board opted to defer its decision on whom to entrust its TV rights.
“The network acknowledges the great effort expended by both ABS-CBN and the PBA to reach an agreement with regards to the coverage of the games. However, despite reaching common ground on most of the proposed terms, both parties have reached a deadlock on certain crucial matters. As such, ABS-CBN has withdrawn its proposal,” said ABS-CBN in a press statement.
“ABS-CBN sincerely appreciates the generous time and effort the PBA commissioner and board of governors have expended during the exclusive negotiations,” ABS-CBN also stated.
PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios said ABS-CBN’s withdrawal doesn’t mean Solar Sports automatically bags the broadcast rights.
“It’s still open to anybody. We still have many options, like doing the coverage ourselves in a tie-up with another outfit,” said Barrios.
“It so happened that only ABS-CBN, Solar Sports and Makisig Channel had signified interest. But now that ABS-CBN has withdrawn, others might come in,” Barrios also said, adding they still have issues up for clarification with Solar Sports.
Doing away with its old bidding process, the league had given ABS-CBN the first crack at the broadcast rights before entertaining the offer of Solar Sports.

Solar vows best for PBA
SPORTING CHANCE By Joaquin M. Henson
Thursday, May 29, 2008
Now that Solar Sports has officially been awarded the telecast rights for the PBA up to three years starting next season, the story of how the bid was won can finally be told.
Solar vice president for sales and marketing Jude Turcuato said it was an uphill climb from the start.
Last February, the PBA opened discussions with ABS-CBN on the possibility of the Lopez network taking over the rights from ABC-5. ABS-CBN requested for an exclusive window to negotiate and the PBA gave in. Several meetings were held and from early indications, it appeared the PBA wouldn’t even consider an alternative.
Turcuato admitted he got nervous when word got around that the PBA was talking numbers with ABS-CBN. The same tack was taken by ABS-CBN in negotiating for the UAAP rights. ABS-CBN also got an exclusive window and after a series of meetings, the UAAP closed the door to a bidding process.
Then came the breakthrough.
