No its not harsh, God is Just. Why would He grant you eternal life if you didn't continue to follow His words.
The salvation will be granted for those who endure until the end.
God won't love us if we don't love Him.

He is not selective, but He is just.
Why will He love you if you wont love Him.
Love is done interactively, it will be in both ends.
But if you wont love Him, He still have mercy.
Here's what God said:
For He said to Moses, " I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. "

The Romans 9:15

God will love you if you will love Him freely.
