phasing out jeepneys is impossible. its laready culture,a lifestyle and a livelihood of most filipinos. i wont suggest to phase out the jeepneys but if be better to limit the franchise. there are already a lot of jeepneys on the road which are mostly causing traffic.but if there will be no jeepneys asa nman sakay ang mga tao nga mangompra sa carbon.dont tell me that they will be allowed to ride in an airconditioned bus with all of the goods they bought from marketing.

    Jeepney drivers oppose buses
    Cebu Daily News
Last updated 08:13am (Mla time) 10/18/2006

Jeepney drivers from Mandaue City are demanding that they be allowed to enter Osmeña Boulevard in Cebu City again. At the same time, they accused the government of favoring big businessmen.

In a position paper sent to the Cebu City Council, militant transport group leader Tony Pogado said the City Hall was easing jeepneys off the streets to give way to bus companies, which are now starting to ply routes from Cebu City to Talisay and Mandaue cities.

“Gisakripisyo ang panginabuhian sa mga driver ug operator aron matuman ang malupigon ug hinakog nga interest nga anaa sa gahom ug mga kakunsabo (They are sacrificing the livelihood of drivers and operators to give way to the greed and interest of those who are in power and their cohorts),” the position paper read.

The Cebu City government recently imposed Ordinance 1837, which requires jeepneys from other cities and towns to load and unload passengers only in designated terminals.

“Ang klarong tumong sa arbitraryong pag-imposar sa ordinansa mao ang pagwagtang sa mga PUJ og pulihan sa mga bus (The ordinance was arbitrarily implemented to wipe out PUJs (public utility jeepneys) in favor of the buses),” Pogado added.

For Mandaue, their designated terminal is SM City Cebu, the North Jeepney Terminal and Ayala Center Cebu.

According to Pogado, the drivers have the right to enter Osmeña Boulevard and downtown Cebu City because it is stated in their travel line as issued by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, which is a national agency.

Mandaue wants to test bus transit

THE Mandaue City Government is interested in establishing a bus rapid transit (BRT) in the city, with the assistance of business and civic organizations.

The City Council passed a resolution expressing the City’s intent to pursue the project, after Mayor Thadeo Ouano asked the body to do so through a letter.

The City has ventured into preliminary talks with the Partnership with Clean Air, Clean Air Initiatives-Asia, Asian Development Bank and the US Agency for International Development through the Energy and Clean Air Project (Ecap).

The concept was also presented to the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry members last August.

The BRT has been adopted in some American, Latin American and Asian countries. It involves segregated bus lanes with stations along the routes. The bus lanes are exclusively for the BRT units’ use.

It also features pre-board fare collection and fare verification, restricted operator access, and “clean bus” technologies.

The City need not alter roads because the system can be implemented in as little as three-meter-wide streets.

As an advantage over railways, it can be constructed in 12 to 18 months and costs less.

A railway transit, on the other hand, could take three to 30 years to complete and could cost $40-$220 million per kilometer.

In 2001, a firm tasked to make a comprehensive study on Mandaue City’s traffic system design reported that the roads would reach or go beyond their congestion levels by 2005.

The study further recommended the creation of at least five new road links from 2005 to 2010.

The BRT system is also being planned for Metro Manila. (AAG)

... just ADD buses to the streets, not replace jeepneys. Imagine a bus entering urgello or carbon, that would be super congestion.

its just natural that jeepney operators oppose to those since they see it as a competition..
