for you to know how safe you are and to make an honest comment on zip lines, here are some tips and for us to find out every time we try zip line or other challenge course activities:
1. look at all the equipments if it is all rated. ask the technical crew the holding capacities and load limits and if they all the equipments are ISO manufacturer's rated. so helmets (not using construction), harness (not industrial grade, this is one time load), pulleys look at ISO manufacturers markings on load limits, webbings, etc,)
2. Ask technical crew if they know all these ratings and load limits and if they know how to handle emergency situations and rescue operations
3 Installations: ask if who are the installers and if they have certifications: PRCA (professional ropes course assn) ACCT (assn of challenge course technology) or ANSI (american national stds institute). This will at least guarantee that they are not run of the mill installations and not just for fun but safety is the first priority and concern
4. Ask for the distance and the diameter of the cable. some installations might only be using a single cable due to the dead weight factor but the diameter of the cable varies and it is more safer to use a single cable (at a bigger diameter) a single cable with a bigger diameter is safer than a double cable with a smaller diameter on long distance installations due to dead weight of the cable. (ask tech crew if they know tech specifications on this, there is a standard to be followed on distances and diameter of the cable to be installed) when to use a double cable and when to use a single but bigger in diameter cable. usually at 400m or more you have to use a single cable at 1/2 diameter than a double cable at 3/8 (the dead weight of 3/8 x 2 cables is heavier than the dead weight of 1/2 x 1) so it will be safer to use a single 1/2 cable at 400m or more (this also depends on the sag inclination) Usually as laymen and for some installers, we think that it will be safer to have 2 lines than one..
5. zip line is gravity fed more or less at 20 to 30 degree angle so the longer the zip line the higher the risk for a higher thermal velocity, so 650m or more will already be using a wind drag to stop you at the other end aside from the break system which is usually made of rubber on wood with static, dynamic ropes or bungee cord. don't be fooled if they say that it is more than 650m one way if no wind drag is provided. please note that the highest so far now in asia for zip lines is in dahilayan in bukidnon at 840m. if you have a chance to visit them, you can see that they are really at 800m or more..for people who knows what zip lines is, just merely looking at the installations you know if the owners, installers or crew know what they are talking about..
Zip lines is becoming a fad in cebu but it is not just fun, safety should be the first priority..
