For example, they are planning to file a bill in Congress to declare him a national hero. And there are others who say that he is the best role model for kids and that we should build more boxing gyms to help youngsters out of poverty.

His achievements are great.. in boxing. But this country doesn't need more aspiring boxers, we need more aspiring doctors, engineers and scientists to help build our country. All of these kids who are told to be like Pacquaio are gonna end up disappointed, and their lives a failure because there isn't going to be another Pacquaio for generations.

I also agree that it's tasteless to make fun of Mexicans trying to enter the U.S. illegally. Not only tasteless but hypocritical. First of all, we Pinoys are just as guilty of illegal migration as they are and we are on the other side of the world. Second of all, Mexico is a much more progressive country than ours and they've made so many improvements in a lot of areas the last few years. It's great that Pacquaio beat most of Mexico's boxers, but when are we going to start beating Mexico in real world terms?
Let me add that some people here in Cebu are crazy to even think about declaring Pacquiao as an "adopted son of Cebu", that a statue of him be made here in Cebu, that a group of local politicians passed a resolution urging Pacquiao to run for Senator, and now a local councilor who was very inspired by the Pacman suggests that every Cebu City barangay should have boxing clinics.

Like religion, pride can drive people mad.
