@TS: hmm... maybe they've got something to prove? Di man siguro social climber ang tawag ana bai. mga tao mana na walay ikabuga and try to live beyond their means.

As for Cebudoc, well, it's a pricey school, so I could at least safely say na majority sa estudyante diha are well off so it won't surprise me of course na social ila dating kai mao man pud ang upbrining.

Ang ang pugson na nimo sakay ug jeep na hatod kuha mana or pakan-on ug carenderia na naanad sa watefront. Maybe the parents didn't raise a well rounded child na dili makamingle ug dali sa ubos2x nila.

Moral of the story? If you can't keep up with them then don't step up.

TS: its not on what they wear, the phone, gadgets, and the cars that they have... d tanan bro e utang.... wa ta kahibaw munas ug tigum para makapalit lang cla sa ilang mga goals... Think of this.... Wa ka nag aim ug anything that you wanted? Unsa man to nga butang? then what man imo na feel on that day nga nakuha or nag succeed ka sa imo goal nga makuha to? Gihagoan nimo or wala?? Ask yourself aning mga questions... and one more thing bro... Its not how expensive the things that you want, but on what have you done to achieved it.. k? ^_^

mga tao mana na walay ikabuga and try to live beyond their means. = SOCIAL CLIMBER!!!
Mao gyud na pinakashortcut nga definition.

Like I said, people who are being labeled as social climbers don't know they are social climbers.
The real social climbers either are having credit problems or their parents are buried in debt because of them.

They might say it is their determination as they struggle for the things that they want.
But there is no excuse if you are getting those things at the expense of others. (Parents, Banks)
It is due to their immaturity that they cannot accept that they are not like their filthy rich friends.

Well when I read books and I encounter characters who are like these they are usually described as "capricious" (or "caprisiosa" in bisaya) and superficial. Superficial is more of the right term for it (for the sake of correcting lang).

Coz when I think of the term "social climber" broad ra kaayo. It could be employees working up the corporate lader, etc. heheh...

Seriously, i get the colloquial meaning of social climber in our culture.

    Hahaha...

I learned something today. When I was there visiting Cebu last Feb 2010, my friends kept laughing at me coz I was carrying a Nokia cellphone that I purchased for P1k (I needed temporay mobile phone while there). I had to learn to text better and faster kay I wasn't done with what I wanted to say 'text' naa na dayun response from them. You have to text to save your 'load'. When you call, nobody wants to answer. Here overseas, tawag jud, although texting is getting popular also. I have a monthly phone bill (I chose the cheapest monthly service like most people I know), and the mobile phone was free upon signing a 1yr-2yr contract. The only time people would have a fancier one would be when the company pays for it and features like internet, texting, web-browsing, company internet access are needed as part of the job. Like many upper level professionals have to have a 'blackberry' , company's choice.

I thought Filipinos or Asians in general (sorry I have to generalize some) are just 'techy', the reason of their loving affection with their very fancy delicate cellphones. Everybody shows them and have them around. One would be walking around alone but would look so pre-occupied with texting and whatnot.

Other people diay, lain diay to purpose. Others were doing it for show diay. Mahal raba kaayo mga phones, they're not free.

    @tokidoki...

    Well, you could say that...
But then I think about the purpose of their behavior.
Usually, it is because they want to wear the same feathers as their socialite friends.
They want other people to think that they are socialites as well.
and for me, if they are causing problems to other people just to get what they want, They are Social Climbers.
