bad question. there's no such thing is the greatest invention because an invention cannot stand alone. An invention is dependent on previous invention or discovery.

let's start with a computer, before it became a computer today there are many people previously who invented transitor (william bardeen, shockley), vacuum tubes, miniaturization such as IC, point device or mouse (invented by Engelbart).

internet? this internet will never be internet today without those people discovery that we can communicate through wires by codes i.e. morse codes. Sending bits through wires to form an information is basically the same as old fashioned telegram or that spotlight codes we use to communicate with our hottie neighbor.

let's talk about airplane. Engines, aerodynamics, etc are discovered by other people. Even before wright brothers did it, there was hot air balloon or there are many failed attempts that the brothers learned from those trials.

An invention or discovery is like a jigzaw puzzle that many people contribute previously and most likely the person who is recognized as inventor is the last one who put the last piece of the puzzle.
