I agree that both men and wome really lied. I think the correct question is: Why humans lie? For me, Some people do this because of defense mechanism. They don't want someone to get hurt if they tell the truth.

We lie because we are afraid that we might hurt someone, scared that we might get our butts kicked if we tell the truth, etc. So what if we lie a little bit. After all we are not perfect. But remember some people are just what you call "chronic liars" Now this one is an uncurable disease.
