I especially love the last line of the hymn. It takes a dig at the rival services the Army and Navy (the Air Force hadn't come into being at the time the hymn was written): "If the Army and Navy ever gaze on heaven's scenes, they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines."

The Marines are charged with securing US embassies the world over.

Did you guys notice the landing craft the Marines rode to the beachhead? Officially called the Landing Craft Vehicle, Personnel (LCVP), or more popularly known as the Higgins boat after its designer, Andrew Higgins. I saw one on display in Normandy and was astonished to learn it was mostly made of plywood! I used to think they were made of steel and could deflect bullets, but no, machine gun fire could quickly chew it (and the hapless troops inside) into shreds. The forward ramps were metal (I think), but the sides were plywood.

Interesting read from the website of Capt. Dale Dye, USMC Ret., the show's military adviser (he also did the same work on Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan, among many others).

I'm wondering if metal at that time were scarce due to it being used for more formidable weapons of war, but that is ridiculous though having no protection heading into beach head knowing there will be heavy enemy fire.. interesting pic though
