GooD news to all MRT 3 passengers, with all the news regarding those earthquake happenings around the globe that definetely alarmed our fellow citizens, Metro Rail Transit line 3 (MRT 3) general manager Roberto Lastimoso said yesterday the EDSA-based railway system’s structures are earthquake-proof.

The railway system’s structures are designed to withstand earthquakes, Lastimoso stressed, as mandated by the project’s engineers, builders and financiers.

Aside from this, Lastimoso said, MRT personnel – specifically security guards – are continuously undergoing drills not only against temblors but also fires and other natural and man-made catastrophes and emergencies.

All MRT 3 stations, he added, have evacuation plans that are posted in strategic locations.

After decade-long lull, RP sugar industry recovers

    MANILA
    - Sugar is enjoying a revival in the Philippines, a decade after the traditional producer saw output slump and was forced to rely on imports, an industry official said yesterday.

“Next year should be a bumper crop,” predicted Philippine Sugar Research Institute Director General Leon Arceo.

The industry expects production in the crop year starting September to rise eight percent from an estimated 2.1 million tons in the previous season, he told a news conference.

    World prices

This year, with world sugar prices rising to around 20-US-cents-a- pound levels, the Philippines managed to export about 200,000 tons.

However, the bulk of it was sold to the United States, which gives the Philippines a quota allocation with guaranteed premium prices of up to 24 cents a pound, he added.

Higher-yielding and more pest- and disease-resistance varieties developed and spread by the institute, improved milling efficiency, the use of new technologies, as well as buoyant global demand helped turn the industry around, he added.

An administration lawmaker will file today a resolution calling for the creation of a joint legislative panel to secure the legalization of 400,000 undocumented or better known as TNT's Filipinos at US.

Re. Cuenco said that the Philippine contingent must embark on a US mission to make an official position on senate bill 2611,which could give an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants the opportunity to acquire permanent residency and citizenship.

He said that the issue will be taken up before the house committees on foreign affairs, overseas workers affairs and interparliamentary relations and diplomacy, in coordination with the Departments of Foreign Affairs and Labor and Employment, and Overseas Workers Welfare Association.

This would definetely give our kababayans high hopes of working there legally to help their families living here and as well as our economy. The best way also to show the Filipinos talents.

PGH to get P100 M for new equipment — DBM

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has released P100 million to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) for the upgrading of its facilities under the state-owned hospital’s "centennial projects."

Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya Jr. said the bulk of the P100 million, which will be funded through the reenacted P907.56-billion General Appropriations Act of 2005, will be used to purchase hospital equipment.

Another P3 million will be allocated for the acquisition of a mobile health van "with portable multi-channel ECG (electrocardiogram) machine and standard ultrasound machine," he said.

The remaining P16 million will be used to finance the rehabilitation of the PGH’s pay ward building.

Andaya, however, made it clear that the mobile health van for the state-owned hospital was considered within the ambit of the President’s approval and therefore exempted from the Chief Executive’s recent order "directing the continued adoption of austerity measures in the government," including the purchase of motor vehicles.

^ Nice. At least the premiere general hospital can utilize the fund for the new equipments which will be used in the future. Just recently, the hospital opened up for the Ophthalmologic Center by which GMA attended the inauguration.

More good news: Two of the Filipino oil workers who were held hostage in Nigeria were freed. It was quite good that DFA -DOLE immediately attended to the needs of the workers as they extend the necessary assistance to them and to their immediate families.
