Arnes de mano, a term used by the Spanish friars to describe the ornate trappings on the komedya actors’ costumes, became a new name for the hidden, artistic expressions of kali movements. Arnes de mano was abbreviated to arnis, after the poet, Laureate Francisco “Balagtas” Baltazar, mentioned it in his epic “Florante at Laura”: “Larong buno’t arnes na kinakitaan ng kanikaniyang liksi’t karunungan”.

Sijo Chua Giok Beng, founder of ngo cho kun - "fists of the five ancestors” - was born in Fukien province, amidst the turmoil of the declining years of the Ching dynasty (1644-19 1 1). The roots of ngo cho kun can be traced to Sijo Chua Kiam, also known as Giok Beng and I-Ho. He lived in the village of Pan Be, a few miles from the city of Chuan Chiu. Raised in a wealthy family, Beng's parents were engaged in the sauce manufacturing business. They owned a sauce garden, which is where Chinese food is processed by immersing it in a salty sauce.

Return of the Jesuits to the Philippines.

13 Dec: The government turns over the Escuela Municipal to Jesuit fathers. The Jesuits agreed to direct the Escuela Municipal (Ateneo de Manila University).

Sir Thomas Francis Wade publishes the first internationally accepted romanization system for the Chinese language. Herbert Allen Giles, a professor of Chinese at Cambridge University in England, modified Wade’s system in 1892. The Wade-Giles system remained the international standard until 1977, when the United Nations adopted the pinyin zimu, or "combining sounds spelling" system devised by Mainland Chinese scholars during the late 1950s.
