    Top 7 Recap
    Theme- Country Music
    Mentor- Martina McBride

-Phil Stacey sang “Where The Blacktop Ends.” Randy Jackson said “Dude, you could have a career in country music.” Paula Abdul said “It does seem like the genre that you feel most comfortable in.” Simon Cowell said “This is the only time I’ve heard you in a long, long time where I thought you chose a good song.”

-Jordin Sparks sang “Broken Wing.” Randy Jackson said “Another great performance.” Paula Abdul said “I think you did a fantastic job.” Simon Cowell said “This is the first time since we have met where I actually believe based on that performance you could win American Idol.”

-Sanjaya Malakar sang “Let’s Give Them Something To Talk About.” Sanjaya had his hair pulled back with a red bandana. Randy Jackson said “That was really just like karaoke, dude.” Paula Abdul said “Well, we’re watching someone who loves adversity. You thrive on it don’t you.” Simon Cowell said “Utterly horrendous. I’m being serious. Honestly, it was as bad as anything we see at the beginning of American Idol.” Seacrest accused Simon Cowell of never really liking Sanjaya. Simon Cowell added “I know this has been funny for awhile, but based on the fact that we are supposed to be finding an American Idol, it was hideous.” Seacrest then asked Randy, “If Sanjaya nailed it would Simon ever really like it.” Before Randy could reply, Simon Cowell said “I liked it last week, big mouth.”

-Lakisha Jones sang “Jesus Take The Wheel.” Randy Jackson said “For me, this had some pitch problems in the beginning, it wasn’t my favorite vocal of yours.” Paula Abdul said “It sounded a little bit like you were shouting.” Simon Cowell said “You know, it’s like eating a hamburger for breakfast, it doesn’t go together, you know, and I don’t think you and that song went well together at all.”

-Chris Richardson sang “Mayberry.” Randy Jackson said “I just didn’t feel any sense of connection, any emotion from you.” Paula Abdul said “The joy and the love that you have on stage didn’t come through.” Simon Cowell said “What I heard was a very non-descript, nasally vocal which had no impact on me at all.”

-Melinda Doolittle sang “Trouble Is A Woman.” Randy Jackson said “Another solid performance from our resident pro, Miss Melinda Doolittle.” Paula Abdul said “Once again, a girl who knows how to pick the right song, and sing her heart out, and perform like there’s no tomorrow.” Simon Cowell said “It was fantastic.”

-Blake Lewis sang “When The Stars Go Blue.” Randy Jackson said “That was nice.” Paula Abdul said “You kind of have the whole package.” Simon Cowell just thought it was ok.

it's not over for sanjaya, it's only the beginning for the american idol's most talked about contestant.
he had overcome adversity and undue hostility with unflinching integrity, determination, and class, most of us can only hope for.
