Philippine History from the FMA Warrior’s Perspective (1880-1889).

    1880 –

The Hong Kong-Manila submarine cable was laid (via Cape Bolinao).

    1881 –

    1882 –

Jose Rizal went to Spain to pursue medical studies which he had started at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila.

The Kodokan was founded in 1882 by the late Prof. Jigoro Kano who himself had established Judo.

Judo was derived from Jujitsu which had many names and schools. Jujitsu is an art for either attacking others or defending oneself with nothing but one's own body. Prof. Kano adopted the superlative parts of all the Jujitsu schools, got rid of precarious parts, and established the new Kodokan Judo based on his own insight and arrangement. It started with only nine disciples and a twelve-mat dojo. The Kodokan Judo was recognized in a few years to be excellent since its students overwhelmed the Jujitsu athletes at the Police Bujitsu Contest.

    1883 –

    1884 –

The establishment of the Manila water-supply by the "Carriedo" endowment.

Abolition of the Tribute and Poll Tax and establishment of the cedula personal.

    1886 –

Philippine Exhibition held in Madrid under the auspices of the Spanish government.

Noli Me Tangere, a novel written by José Rizal, was published in 1887, in Europe. The title is Latin, and means "touch me not." Rizal took these words from the Bible, specifically the Gospel of St. John 20: 13-17. The English version is often titled as The Social Cancer. This was his first novel. He was 26 at that time. This book was historically significant and was instrumental in the creation of the Philippines. The book indirectly influenced a revolution although the author, Jose Rizal, advocated non-violent means and only direct representation to the Spanish government. The novel was written in Spanish, the language of the educated at that time. There were many and diverse native languages and regional cultures.

Rizal started his novel in Madrid, Spain. Half was done by the time he left for Paris, and it was completed in Berlin, Germany. Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, a well known writer volunteered his service for proofreading and consultant.

The novel created so much controversy that only a few days after his arrival, Governor General Terrero received him at the Malacañang Palace and told him of the charges saying that the Noli was full of subversive ideas. After a discussion, the liberal Governor General was appeased; but he mentioned that he was unable to offer resistance against the pressure of the church to take action against the book. The persecution can be discerned from Rizal's letter to Leitmeritz: "My book made a lot of noise; everywhere, I am asked about it. They wanted to anthemize me (to excommunicate me) because of it . . . I am considered a German spy, an agent of Bismarck, they say I am a Protestant, a freemason, a sorcerer, a damned soul. It is whispered that I want to draw plans, that I have a foreign passport and that I wander through the streets by night ..."

16 Apr: Colonel Juan Arola's victory in Sulu Island; capture of Maibun, Jolo.

30 Aug: The Commission of Faculty issued a report condemning the Noli as heretical, scandalous and offensive to the Spanish administration in the islands.

    1888 –

In February of 1888, barely six (6) years after Kodokan was established by Dr. Jigoro Kano, Dr. Jose Rizal our national hero, went to Japan via Yokohama. Historians narrated how Dr. Rizal was fascinated by the beauty, discipline and cleanliness of Japan. Nothing was mentioned who taught him judo except that upon his return to the Philippines, he taught his students judo while in exile in Dapitan. There is now a cooperation between Kodokan Judo Institute and the Philippine Amateur Judo Association (PAJA) to conduct researches to find out if Rizal was personally tutored by his fellow teacher and European traveler Dr. Kano. Both are almost of the same height , body built and good sportsman. Efforts are being exerted to trace the kin's of the judo students of Rizal in Dapitan.

Dr. Jose Rizal visited the United States and demonstrated the use of the yo-yo as not only a pacifying toy but a deadly projectile weapon.

    1889 –

Native Filipinos were finally accepted into the secret society of Freemasonry. Eager to support Freemasonry, Filipinos joined lodges throughout Europe. It was through these fraternal orders that the Filipino found a medium through which to publish propaganda against the oppressive rule of Spain.

Don Jose de Azes operated a school of Spanish fencing and Filipino eskrima. The school, called Tanghalan ng Sandata (Hall of Weapons), was located inside the Ateneo de Manila, an exclusive Jesuit high school. The Tanghalan was a place where many future leaders of the Philippine Revolution met and practiced eskrima and Western fencing. Jose Rizal, a Filipino national hero and graduate of Ateneo de Manila, went on to study medicine, philosophy, literature, several languages, arts and crafts, and to practice fencing at the University of Madrid.

Paris Exhibition; opening of the Eifel Tower for the occasion.

France abandoned the Panama Canal project.
