This series is fantasy, Boardwalk Empire is crime film. Fantasy clearly needs to be more convincing. It is grounded in imagination more than reality after all. Crime film, on the other hand, is grounded in reality more than imagination. It needs to be as accurate as possible, which is a much easier challenge. Also, fantasy takes a much larger stage (often an entire world) and a much larger cast of characters than crime film. Thus, plot considerably moves slower in fantasy than crime film. There are still more differences to cite, but the two points above already demonstrate why the two series are very difficult (if not possible) to compare.

You know, fantasy is a genre that critics of film and television consider the least for nominations. However, to date, only this work of fantasy has come the closest to the The Lord of the Rings film trilogy in the number of nominations for even the choicest awards, not just the technical awards. The nods are proof of how impressed the critics are with this series. (By the way, I'm a fan of Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos, and The Wire.)
