@brian_d - yes, you do not have to prove anything to anybody because you have already displayed your zephyr "achievements & successes" ostentatiously. clearly, we do not envy these.

yeah, this is not a fisticuff but as a remark to your recoils, at least we know what the difference is between class and crass.

Well do I apologize if some people found my previous posts to be "arrogant" and even "crass". That is rather uncharacteristic of me actually. I do hope that I have driven a point and if it is not clear enough, may I be allowed to explain my views on the matter.

The first is that, there is success and career advancement outside the call center industry.

It might not be easy work and money at first, but it can be just as rewarding if not more stable in the long run . TRUE, a call center agent earns more money than a fresh CPA board top placer working as a jr. auditor for SGV.

It is TRUE again, that the Call Center/BPO business is a sunshine industry in this country. However, let us not be blinded by thinking that this is a panacea to all the employment problems this country is facing. In the short run the industry does provide a definitely more financially rewarding job opportunities for those who are qualified. Compared this to a few years ago when options were more limited. It sure is a big hurrah to us Filipinos.

The problem is this: In the thousand or so agents in the industry, how many will actually get to become Team Leaders? OM? Account Manager,QA? and actually move up the ladder within the industry in the years to come? I dare say 1 out of 10. Certainly not due to industry stagnation, but rather due to simple dictates of the corporate world and natural selection. What will happen to the remaining 9? Two things: either they stay within the industry and remain an agent or get out and get a day job.

In this very competitive job market, the operational word in staying competitive is the acquisition of TRANSFERABLE SKILLS that can be applied and are relevant across industries (whether its retail, manufacturing, telco, transportation, ect) and across function (whether its marketing, hr, finance, operations. ect).

Zoom forward ten years from now, what could have happened to the CPA topnotcher who started out getting paid P8,000 a month compared to the call center agent who is enjoying a minimum of P12,000 plus allowances? I would like to hope that each of them should have carved a niche for themselves in their respective fields.

The worst thing that can happen to today's young call center agents is to be caught in the so-called "salary trap". No longer enjoying their jobs, but are unwilling to look for another one. The reason?
    1. Experience and skills garnered over the years within the call industry may not be relevant in other fields/jobs desired hence the difficulty in shifting jobs/careers without starting from scratch.

    2. Lifestyle has become dependent on current high salary hence the unwillingness or difficulty to downscale one’s lifestyle.

I admire the optimism and pride exhibited by the posters in this thread, whom I presume are in the call center industry themselves. I am an outsider looking in, and this I have to say to the remaining 9 I’ve mentioned above. Within your current scope of work, build on skills and expertise that will take you to whatever industry and job of your choice. Beyond the lure of high compensation, plan long term. Lifetime employment is a thing of the past, but we can all be all sure be employable for the rest of our working lives. Better yet let’s start our own small business. Hardwork still counts, and yes that might include having to extract urine from gorillas at the beginning.

    Good Day!

Ah okay, outsiders point of view jud.

I understand that not everyone can go up the corporate ladder in this industry, but mind you, the same goes for all other industries elsewhere ----> not everyone becomes a bank manager, an evp or a real estate senior executive blah blah blah....

The only thing that started this rant anyhow was your comment on being caught dead working in a call center. You should be careful in choosing your words you know. Who knows, you might even try kissing our feet just to climb up the corporate ladder.

    Peace out!
