Systems Administrator in a medium to large company should know the following aside from just installing an OS... knowledge in installing and maintaining a workstation will not make you a System Administrator.
You should be able to know or experiences the following at least...
- Disaster and Recovery
- DNS Configuration
- DHCP Configuration
- In depth knowledge with TCP/IP, VOIP architecture etc.
- Data Protection
- Network Security
- LAN/WAN Technology
- Storage Knowledge (NAS, DAS, FIBER, SCSI, Tape Drives, IBM, HP etc )
- ISP's
- Domain Controllers
- VLANs
- VPN Tunneling
- Knowledge Windows Servers
- Knowledge Linux Servers
If you think managing Internet cafe will make you an Admin... Think again.
tho it is a good start...

But it is a requirements that a System Administrator should know these things.
How would a System Administrator isolate the issues if he/she don't have and idea when it comes to these things.
VOIP maybe, then again he/she should have knowledge on these.
just my two cents.
Additional:
Load balance
IIS Administration
Clustering
