3 arrested for rob-slay of priest in Cebu

Police arrested Wednesday morning three persons, including two teenagers, who robbed and killed Reverend Fr. Jovencio Rabusa in Talisay City on Monday night. Superintendent Henry Biñas, chief of the Talisay City Police station, identified the gunman as Russel Ravanes, 29, and resident of the village of Cansojong in Talisay City, where the priest was robbed and shot dead. The other two suspects include a 15-year-old boy (the Philippine Daily Inquirer is withholding names of minors tagged in crimes) and Gerard Tradio, 18, also from Cansojong village.

Ravanes, interviewed by reporters Wednesday, confessed to shooting Rabusa. He said he and his companions only wanted to rob the priest but he shot him when Rabusa "ran away." Biñas said police are tracking down the fourth suspect in the killing of Rabusa on Monday evening along the dimly lit portion of the South Coastal Road in Cansojong, Talisay City. Rabusa was walking toward the house of his sister when he was shot and robbed of his cellular phone. He died at the district hospital of Talisay City. Biñas said Tradio was arrested at around 6 a.m. on Wednesday; he revealed to the police the names of his cohorts during questioning.

Upon hearing of the arrest of Tradio over the radio, a 15-year-old suspect surrendered to the police. The police nabbed Ravanes at past 9 a.m. Wednesday. Talisay City Mayor Socrates Fernandez lauded the police for their effort to arrest the suspects. Robbery with homicide charges are being prepared against the suspects. The remains of Rabusa were brought to southern Cebu town of Naga, where he served as a member of the team ministry for several years. His body will be brought to his hometown in Badian on July 10 and will be buried on July 15.

Vidal condemns assault on Fr. Ven

THE Cebu Archdiocese, led by Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, yesterday condemned the killing of Fr. Jovencio Rabusa during a robbery last Monday night.

Vidal, through Cebu Archdiocese media liaison officer Msgr. Achilles Dakay, asked people to pray for the slain Naga priest.

Dakay said Cardinal Vidal was saddened by what happened to Rabusa.

Vidal, who is currently in Manila, will talk to the Rabusa family upon his arrival within the week. Rabusa was from Badian and was the second child of seven siblings.

Church officials said that after his body is presented to his parish in Naga, it will be brought to his hometown in Badian.

Dakay said that in behalf of Rabusa, four parishes in Cebu will hold an “act of reparation” to pray for the repose of the slain priest’s soul.

According to Msgr. Cristobal Garcia, chairman of the Commission on Worship, the act of reparation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a special prayer that deals with the repair of sins committed against ordained clergy.

Garcia said that because Rabusa is a priest, who is consecrated through ordination, his killing is a grave violation against Jesus Christ.

The prayer, instituted by Pope Leo XIII, is conducted as a way to make amends on sins committed against ordained persons such as priests and vicars.

The act of reparation is also a way to commemorate the death of an ordained clergy.

The act of reparation will be conducted in Naga, Badian, Bantayan and Santander. These towns are parishes where Rabusa served since he was ordained as a priest.

    Strict

The Episcopal Vicar of the Cebu Archdiocese, meanwhile, said there was a possibility that Rabusa fought back against his assailants.

In an interview with radio dyLA yesterday, Episcopal Vicar Msgr. Esteban Binghay said that the slain priest may have fought back against the robbers before he was
    shot.

Binghay said a person’s first reaction to being robbed is to never give up his possessions.

Rabusa, who was once assigned to Santander, was previously accused of physically abusing his altar boys in 2006. He denied the allegations.

Rabusa allegedly abused an altar boy, who was also a son of a police inspector, because he gave him the wrong prayer booklet.

Binghay said that he knew Rabusa was very strict in implementing rules in his parish.

Binghay said that after he left Santander town, Rabusa underwent anger management to control his temper.(JKV)
