MANDAUE CITY, Philippines – Mandaue City police officials will attend a closed-door session on Monday with the city's councilors to “allow them to freely talk” about reports that attempts were made to derail the murder investigation into the death of call center agent Lynn Vi Ebarita.
“We will invite the (victim’s) father to allow him to express his concern and have the police give him the status of the investigation and reassure him as well,” Vice Mayor Carlo Fortuna said.
The venue is the vice mayor’s office.
Senior Superintendent Orlando Ualat, Mandaue City Police Office chief, and Lynn Vi's father, Vicente Ebarita Jr., were invited to the special session.
Lynn Vi’s body was found inside Nikkei Garden Hotel with at least 24 stab wounds. Murder charges were filed against her close friend, Jonnelle Enfectana.
Amid denials by top police officials, Fortuna raised concerns over reports that a politician from Borongan town in Samar, the hometown of Enfectana, had tried to influence Mandaue investigators by using connections with senior police officials.
Three other murder suspects, described as Enfectana's relatives in Eastern Visayas, are still at large.
Fortuna said he received reliable information last week that politicians and ranking policemen outside of the city are influencing the investigation.
The vice mayor said the suspicion was bolstered by the transfer of Chief Inspector Eddie Recamara, head of the team that investigated the death of Ebarita.
Recamara is now assigned at the police station 4 in Barangay (village) Casuntingan.

CEBU CITY, Philippines – While there was some evidence that outside
influences tried to intervene in the Mandaue City police's
investigation of the murder of Lynn Vi Ebarita, this did not affect
the investigation' s outcome, a city official said.
Vice Mayor Carlo Fortuna said cases such as Ebarita's are bound to
draw attention. He did not say exactly what this attempt to intervene
was or who was behind it.
"A high profile case like this cannot discount such a possibility, "
the vice mayor said following a private meeting between members of the
City Council and the city police.
The meeting was scheduled to tackle allegations of cover-ups in the
investigation into Ebarita's death.
Fortuna said the city police assured that the investigation would be
airtight.
Ebarita was found dead at the Nikkei Garden Hotel in Mandaue City on
January 22, wrapped in garbage bags and bearing 24 stab wounds.
Investigators said her friends last saw her on the night of January 18.
Ebarita's friend Jonnelle Enfectana was named the primary suspect
behind the murder. She is the goddaughter of a ranking politician in a
town of Eastern Samar.
Enfectana was believed to have had the help of others in killing Ebarita.
After the closed-door meeting, the City Council commended personnel
from the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) for their progress in the
investigation, even though the case was not yet considered closed.
The city legislators also recommended the "spot promotion" of members
of MCPO's Investigation and Detection Management Bureau (IDMB) who
were instrumental in the speedy developments of the Ebarita case.
The policemen involved in the case of Emily Nuñeza, who was killed by
a man she met through a dating program on radio, and the case of
Jocelyn Mendoza, the wife of an overseas Filipino worker who was
killed in her home, were also commended.
Nine policemen were lauded by the City Council. These are Chief
Inspector Eddie Recamara, Inspector George Aniñon, Senior Police
Officer 1 Arnulfo Quiachon Jr., Senior Police Officer 1 Rico
Cabatingan, Police Officer 3 Protacio Tago Jr., Police Officer 2
Sanchez Fegarido, Police Officer 2 Marino Loufranco, Police Officer 2
Roberto Neri, and Police Officer 1 Crestito Raboy.
Senior Superintendent Orlando Ualat, director of the MCPO, assured
councilors that the police would continue to strengthen the cases
despite the transfer of Recamara.
Recamara used to be the head of the IDMB. He was reassigned as
commander of MCPO's station 4 in Barangay Casuntingan.
"The team of investigators (is) still intact at the IDMB except for
Recamara. If needed he can always assist the team," Ualat said. "I
assure you that the transfer has nothing to do with the investigation. "
Fortuna and the City Council said they would closely monitor
development in Ebarita's case considering she was a resident of the city.
"We affirm our full confidence and support over Ualat and his men,"
Fortuna added. "We likewise impressed unto him our keen interest in
the case."
Since the start of their term, it was the first time that the
opposition-led City Council expressed commendations to a large group
of policemen.
