THE WORLD BANK 2008 ESSAY INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

    Deadline: March 23, 2008

    WANTED: Your Practical Ideas

Shaping the City of Your Dreams

In 2007, for the first time in human history, the majority of people in the world, particularly in developing countries, will be living in urban areas. Life in the city is often associated with more opportunities, better access to employment, education, health and other services. Cities are often called engines of economic growth, contributing disproportionately to the national gross domestic product (GDP). They are also centers of innovation, entrepreneurship and investment. But many cities also have a large part of their population living in slums, without essential services such as water, sanitation and energy, and threatened by environmental hazards, violence and social exclusion. As more and more people move from the countryside to the city, and as city populations grow, there is a growing need for solutions to the issues of urban poverty, environment, and urban infrastructure (housing, roads, water, energy etc.).

What can you do to shape the city of your dreams?

Please answer all three questions below:

    1) Think about the city you live in. What are the biggest opportunities and challenges for people living there?

    2) What needs to be done to transform your city into the city of your dreams?

    3) What could be your role, working together with your peers, in shaping the city of your dreams? Please focus on one or two points you mentioned in question 2).

You may use some of the points below to structure your answer:

If you have been personally involved in concrete initiatives, write specifically about your experience:

Who have you worked with? Who have you helped? What have you accomplished? In what way would you consider this work to be innovative? How have you measured the results of your work?

    Looking ahead:
How would you expand or improve the impact of your work? How can other youth replicate your experience?

If you don’t have practical experience, write specifically about your ideas:
How would you work with your peers to shape the city of your dreams?

    Who can participate?
The International Essay Competition is open to all young people, students and non-students alike, between the ages of 18 and 25 (born between 1983 - 1990). Essays should be submitted by individuals.

    Length and Format of Essay

Your essay may not be longer than 10 pages (4000 words maximum), 1.5 line-spaced.

You are required to provide an abstract of no more than one page. An abstract is a short summary in which you explain the aim, the methodology, the reasoning and the main conclusions of your paper.
The abstract will be used by the jury to make a pre-selection.

You may submit your paper and abstract in English, French, Spanish, Arabic or Portuguese.

Question, shaxyra, why do you think that having such group sessions would make you a better and more active writer?

I would like other people's ideas too, please everyone who's been participating/posting here in this thread, would regular group meetings make you more productive in writing?

Wanted Submissions for the second issue of Likhaan: the Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature

After the successful launch of the maiden issue of Likhaan: the Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature last December, the University of the Philippines Institute of Creative Writing is now inviting submissions for the second issue, which will be edited by National Artist Virgilio S. Almario.

Submissions will be considered in the following genres, in both English and Filipino:

    • Short stories ranging from about 12 to 30 pages double-spaced (in 11-12 points Times Roman, New York, Palatino, Book Antique, Arial or some such standard font). A suite of short prose pieces will be considered.

    • A suite of four to seven poems, out which the editors might choose three to five. Long poems will be considered in lieu of a suite.

    • Essays (critical, scholarly, and/or creative nonfiction), subject to the same length limitations as short stories, above.

    • Excerpts from graphic novels, or full short graphic stories, for reproduction in black and white on no more than 10 printed pages, 6” x 9”. Excerpts should be accompanied by a synopsis of the full narrative.

All submissions must be original, and unpublished anywhere else. They should be accompanied by a biographical sketch (no more than one or two short paragraphs) of the author, including contact information (address, telephone number, e-mail address). Submissions may be e-mailed to likhaanjournal@gmail.com, or posted to The Editors, Likhaan Journal, UP Institute of Creative Writing, Rizal Hall, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City, 1101. They should be received (whether by e-mail or post) no later than May 31.

[color=navy]^^@shaxyra, not that I am saying it's not a good suggestion but if meetings are to be held only for discussions and sharing information and ideas about writing, wouldn't it just be the same what we're doing now in this thread where the ideas and information on writing are being shared clearly through written articles? (some of which I posted previously and will keep posting here on for everyone's convenience.)

And regarding the children's book project, I am still waiting for material in my inbox. So far I've received only Von!-x two entries which I commented and returned to him to be rewritten. I am still waiting for yours, shaxyra

Thank you for sharing your view, though. How about the others? Would regular group writing sessions help you become a productive writer?

Uy, ko ra diay naka submit? hehe. Diem, i'll leave these two stories as is coz i think my audience/readers are mostly young adults. I'll write separate stories for children. I really think I can do the childspeak thing. probably 300-500 words.
