Gorres, Bautista Set to Break Camp in L.A.!

LOS ANGELES--The two very likeable young and determined prize fighters from the famed ALA Gym in Cebu who had been in deep training at the Wildcard Gym of Freddie Roach in Hollywood, California for their fights on February 24th are almost done with their training regimen in the US and are set to break camp on Friday, February 3rd and return home to Cebu to finish up the final stages of their training.
Z Gorres, the speedy super-flyweight is scheduled to challenge a very tough champion in the person of Fernando Montiel, the WBO light flyweight champion from Sinoloa, Mexico. The fight will be for the world title.
Rey Boom Boom Bautista, the tough and undefeated super bantamweight is set to trade leathers with a Columbian boxer named Feider Viloria. Bautista is said to be up against a tested opponent so a victory for him will certainly propel him to a title fight against the WBO champion Ponce de Leon, assuming that de Leon will win his fight against a wily Filipino, Gerry Penalosa on March 17, 2007 at Las Vegas.
I watched the two young men spar today, each with two different opponents at the Wildcard Gym under the guidance of Freddie Roach and with great support from Edito ALA Villamor. As Roach was giving instructions to the boys between rounds, Villamor was constantly nearby listening and absorbing every word of wisdom that came from Roach.
Gorres sparred with a set of twins, Enrique and Daniel Quevedo. From the looks of his performance, he is set and ready to go and grab the title from Montiel. He was smooth, he was suave and his punches came in bunches. His body movements particularly the side-to-side sways were very impressive and a delight to watch.
Bautista started sparring with a much bigger opponent in the person of Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. The obvious size difference initially kept Bautista at bay but he eventually put up a decent performance and appeared to have negated the advantage of Guerrero in size. Then he sparred with Alejandro Perez who was about his weight class. Bautista did not waste anytime and hammered Perez around the ring for three rounds.
It was fun watching the boys spar and it was very elating to see them use the new mouth guards we made for them last week. Gorres showed no after effect of the root canal treatment he had last week at my office to manage the chronic abscess he had on a bicuspid tooth. I look forward to see them perform on the 24th “for all the marbles”.
Incidentally, I spoke to Freddie Roach and he verified that he will be flying to Cebu on the 17th and will stay a week for the fight. Thus, all my concerns about Roach not being able to take care of the boys for their very important fight was laid to rest.
After the training session, I took the boys to our favorite Thai restaurant next to the gym. The boys enjoyed Thai seafood soup and broiled salmon with teriyaki sauce washed down with high protein soya milk.
Filipino boxers Diosdado Gabi and Vernie Torres joined us for the late lunch. Then Justine Fortune, the conditioning coach at the Wildcard Gym came to join us . During lunch he spoke of providing a long list of training regimen the boys are to follow when they resume their training in Cebu initially under Edito Villamor and then under Freddie Roach when he gets to Cebu on the 17th.
