In the mood for movies (or, the ballad of being Bisdak, romantic or otherwise)
By Januar Yap
In another world, these could be the guys who gave us the good ‘ol folk anthem “Si Filemon, si Filemon,” suddenly taking off. Three years ago, thank God for apparitions, Missing Filemon came about, and the new boys on the block got a taste of the folksy, funky, funny Cebuano.
Even without a major label to back them up, the band has been on the upswing. But time and again, after gradually breezing through the southern airwaves in 2002, the band felt it was waning. Talk about reality check, and it seemed to band leader Lorenzo “Insoy” Niñal (who copy-edits for Sun.Star, by the way) and the rest of the guys also saw how the gig list simply thinned out.
But what’s real life for an artist anyway? Middle of last year, Insoy felt compelled to humor his creative muse again. By December, he hands out a complete album.
Oh, but Filemon has always been there all these time—strolling, musing on.
This time, this clique of city wanderer in slippers buys a ticket to the movies. Even as MF’s first batch of hits (Inday, Suroysuroy, Alas 4, Kamagayan, Eskina) still sails smoothly on the airwaves, here it comes again to send out a fleet of fresh cargo to whistle along.
With the song “Sinesine,” MF retains its original flavor—the quintessential Bisdak bystander waxing poetic about the buwan, adlaw, bituon, kalangitan, uwan while taking a hearty swig of his drink. Lovestruck, starstruck, moonstruck, MF still dates the folksy Cebuano into the city streets, in the age of “whatever”(listen to Englisera).
When MF sings of love, an invisible jester winks from behind and hums some tune you may call “Love in the Time of Piolo and Juday.” The Cebuano lover is a comic wooer in the song Englisera. “Nagkuyog ta sa sinehan/Gikataw-an mo ang trailer ni Piolo ug Judy Ann/Way laing naingon kundi ‘whatever’ and ‘well’/Dayong lakaw sa pultahan.”
Carrier single “Sinesine” is MF’s special platter for the youthful Cebuano moviemakers and cineastes.
Consciously, it’s MF’s proposed anthem for the “indie” filmmaking spirit recently dollying in the community, courtesy of the radically stripped-down business of digital moviemaking. Hear how MF saunters into the lane of nostalgia while airborne with fascination for movies: “Sinesine sa bata pa/Di na unta matapos pa/Bisan pa man sa pagdagan sa panahon/Lantawon mga eksena nga molabay/Tanang tawo makasakay/Saksihan ta ang pagdagan sa panahon…”
Playfully, it turns out that the supposed-filler-turned-hit “Kon Ako Ka Pa lang” is actually a “song for Palang.” Full of beans, lighthearted, mischievous—three lines you can trace to MF’s influences: Eraserheads and The Beatles. But lines you can connect, too, to Yoyoy Villame, Max Surban, or even Teban Escudero. Even as MF essays to create distinct sounds, it remains thoroughly, unabashedly Bisdak in humor and sentiment, and therefore truly our own.
Instrumental in MF’s birth in 2002 were Eimer Tabasa (Love Satellites) on drums, Arni Aclao (The Ire) on bass and Insoy Niñal on guitars and vocals. Friends Ian Zafra (Sheila and the Insects), Paul “Puldo” Cañada (Frank, Zzubu) and journalist Carmel Geverola backed MF in putting out its first album, which then took a life of its own despite a slack in promotion after its members while away time in the gig scene. But “as silently as it disappeared”, as Insoy puts it, MF re-emerged early last year, highlighting its return with gigs in Cebu and Mindanao, where it has earned huge following. It had taken in two new members, Cocoy Hermoso of Beverage (guitars) and Ron Capio of Curious Blossoms (bass).
MF, mga shio, is still very much around and dishing out all the good things, especially those that are close to home. And as they say it in the theaters, “Relax, see a movie.”

I agree with stellar. Nindot na kaayo ang dagan sa mga BisRock karon. Kun gusto ta nga molambo ug mo-prosper pa jud ni sila, di na ta mamalit ug pirated CD's. Palit ta sa original. It might cost us more than the pirated ones, pero nakatabang man sab ta sa mga artists. Kaning mga tig-pirate, igo lang ni sila nga tig-pahimulos sa talent sa uban - wa ni ayo mga sho. Mao ni sila mopatay sa nindot nang dagan sa BisRock karon.
Support BisRock - Buy the Original!
phayter jud ang bisrock gani lang kay naa uban bisrock nga wajud lami. Tang paita gipugos pa jud ug kanta bsan ang lyrics walay sense asta ang beat nga gayagaw lng. Ang uban ra na bisrock ako pasabot ha.. pero kay missing filemon, saludo kay ko ani kay maayo kaayo.. we must be all proud to have this one-of-a-kind artist.
