Philippines has a very rich basketball history, in fact it is the cradle of basketball in Asia.

Here's some RP basketball team's achievements:

1936 --> Philippines finished 5th overall in the 1936 Berlin Olympics in the sport of basketball. Such finish is the highest among all Asian countries who participated in the Olympics even until now. RP defeated Mexico, Estonia, Italy and Uruguay and it's lone loss came from teh hands of the USA team. RP finished with a 4-1 record and hadn't it been for some controversial rulings, RP could've ended up with a bronze or silver.

1951 and 1954 --> Philippines won the Asian Games basketball gold medals

1954 --> RP participated in the FIBA World Championships for the first time and finished the tournament with a 5-2 record and RP captured the bronze medal. The third place finish is the best finish by any Asian country in the FIBA World Championships to date. Carlos Loyzaga finished the tournament with 148 points (16.4 points per game) as the tournament's third leading scorer and earned him a spot in the mythical team.

1958 --> Philippines won another Asian Games gold medal

1960s era --> RP won gold medals during Asian games and one the first FIBA Asia Championships, Philippines won the gold medal and Carlos Badion was named as the tournament's MVP. It was also during these times when Philippines won the right to host the FIBA World Championships but with President Diosdado Macapagal's refusal to hand out visas to players of communist countries Yugoslavia and Soviet Union, the event was suspended.

It was after Carlos Loyzaga's retirement basketball in the Philippines declined yet they played competitively. It was one of RP's final glorious moments when they still managed to make it to the Olympics yet they didn't even managed to make it to the top 10.

1980s era --> Because of the political crises RP is undergoing, it dealt a big blow to RP basketball. San Miguel-Philippines was formed solely for the purpose of competing in international events. The team won the FIBA Asia Championships in 1984 and finished third in FIBA World Championships in 1985, tying the highest ranking RP set during 1954.

After finishing fifth in FIBA Asia Championships in 1985-86, RP basketball further declined. Though they were qualified to compete for the FIBA World Championships, RP failed to submit a team.

After all those achievements, will we not try to regain the glory and the pride that was once ours?

When it comes to boxing, there's no doubt we've got too much potential Filipino fighters. Yet saying that we should give more importance to boxing than basketball is too unfair and should I say a very nonsense idea. Both are different sports and everybody knows that RP can excel in both. Both sports are run independently, we've got ALA for boxing and SMC for basketball as major supporters for the sport. Why not we focus on how to improve such sports especially basketball rather than leave it behind. Di ta magtinapulan.
