folk and bluegrass: mostly i notice the lyrics first. but naa pod times i noticed both... kasin in folk music u can recycle all u want a traditional based riff and put some new input to it and no one will sue you...

newgrass: music and lyrics ako ma notice and the musician ship sa players since this genre requires technicality especially now they set the bars high with Chris Thile, Sam Bush, Infamous Stringdusters, Alison Krauss and Union Station, etc..

    singer/songwriter: lyrics then music

country: music and lyrics. if mainstream nashville music ako pangitaon for good times sake since most of their lyrics are simple and lame... if insurgent/cowpunk/trad ill go for the music and lyrics together. they cannot be divorced...

most songs nga nindot ug "music" o "rhythm" kay nidot ug "lyrics".

ako, i'll go first with good lyrics then next na ang rhythm...

.. i'm both. I relate the lyrics to the melody and the melody to the lyrics. When I listen to a song, i listen to it religiously so to speak, as if im in a trance. I listen to every instrument's relationship to one another, it's hard to explain....

.. here's a suggestion.... pick up one of your favourite song and first listen to it as a whole

... then try to listen to it again but only drumlines
... then listen to it again, but this time listen to the bassline only
... then again, guitar parts only
... then again, keyboards part only
    ... then again, vocals only
... then again, the relation of the drumline to the bassline
... then again, the relation of the drumline to the guitar parts
... then again, relation of the drumline to the keyboard
... then again, relation the the drumline to the vocals
... then again, bassline relation to the guitar parts
... then again, bassline to the keyboards
... then again, bassline relation to the vocals

.. you get my point there ..... and you'll discover that your favourite song is indeed beautiful.

.. the song that i'm obssessed right now is this .... YouTube - Dream Theater - The Count Of Tuscany (Part 1)

It's 50-50. But the thing that I would first check is the music, lyrics follow.
