I agree with Windows Defender, it gets rid of the most common Viruses (Autorun and Trojans), have the fewest false positives and the best of all it runs like a feather. However just like other AV's it's not designed to remove malware which has already infiltrated
.
No. 1 compliment to make Windows Defender more effective is not to open shady applications which came from unreliable sources.
