UV Baby Lancers take Game 1 of Cesafi juniors battle-for-third

THE UNIVERSITY of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers made the most out of the situation that they put themselves in as they claimed Game 1 of the best-of-three series for third place over the University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters, 76-68, in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) juniors basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

UV and UC have previously met in most of the finals in the high school division.

However, the two teams's juniors programs have faltered in the last two seasons, losing in the semifinal round last year and once again this year, thus relegating them to the battle-for-third place series.

But in spite of that, UV appeared to be the hungrier team for the consolation trophy as they turned to their bench to help get the upper hand with their two stars relegated to the bench because of a disciplinary action. Both Gerald Legarde and Vincent Mendoza did not see action as per the orders of head coach Jun Pepito.

In their place came the steady contributions of Michael Cenita, Pete Flores and Lucky Suan, who tallied 16, 14, and 12 points, respectively.

It was the Baby Lancers' second win this week over the Baby Webmasters with the last one coming last Sunday, a 100-94 overtime thriller.

UV will try to wrap up the series this weekend.

Title hunt begins

THE current team may lack the height and the experience, but former University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers captain Neil Rañeses thinks this year’s squad can beat the University of Cebu in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. college finals.



Game 1 of the UV vs. UC finals will be at 6:30 p.m. today after the high school series between Cebu Eastern College and the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu.

“They lack the height and experience. But I believe with the right attitude and determination, they can overcome this challenge. UC is a very strong title contender not just because of (Junmar) Fajardo but because of their vast improvement over the season. My only advice to my younger Lancers brothers is to play focused and keep the spirit burning high,” Rañeses, whose team won the first two Cesafi titles, told Sun.Star Cebu.


UV defeated UC in the elimination round, but the Webmasters prevailed in their semifinal encounter. The Lancers also needed the quotient system to make their 10th straight appearance in the finals and a shot for their “Perfect 10” finish.


Rañeses said UV has always relied on their tough frontline—himself, Dante Elim, JR Quiñahan, Ariel Mepaña, Rino Berami and Greg Slaughter—during their title runs.

Now, that job has fallen to the young Edrian Lao, who has yet to prove himself as a dominant center for the Lancers.


Last year, Slaughter, who is now with Ateneo de Manila University, helped contain the 6’10” Fajardo for UV’s ninth straight title.


This year’s high school finals will be as exciting.


The CEC Dragons, rose from the ashes of last season’s woeful run to regroup and form a deadly squad after the school board approached its school’s alumni basketball association founder Chester Cokaliong.


Cokaliong and other CEC alumni put up P2 million basketball program that is now making waves in the high school competition.


However, the Dragons are expecting a tough challenge from the Eagles, who have become a legitimate title contender after beating the powerhouse UV twice—in the elimination round and in the semifinal round.


Supporters from both schools are expected to fill up the Cebu Coliseum as this championship match marks their impending march to high school basketball domination in the coming years.


Meanwhile, the University of San Carlos Warriors continued their dominance of the Southwestern University Cobras, 69-64, in Game of the best-of-3 series last Tuesday.
