IF ITS CHEAPER IN NY or SINGA, so what? Phils is not a port hub and we are composed of 7000+ islands that it takes more cost on transporting fuel by sea as compared to Singa w/c is only one island. Of course, it takes some percentage of efficiency out transporting from island to island but we don't have a choice right now. We don't also have oil pipelines to connect island to island yet.

To add injury, we are also affected w/ monopoly and oligopolies by the big 3.

This doesn't also mean the govt does not know this problem. They are trying to find ways to get oil more efficiently & competitively inorder to lessen cost and in the meantime, find more ways of generating energy by other means i.e. solar, wind, water, alternative fuels.
What if I LOAD 1 super tanker of fuel from Singapore and sell it in CEBU...

I will pay 12% VAT and Excise TAX....

I will still make a PROFIT..... That is what I am saying.... Its cheaper in NY or SIngapore....

Even though our ports are small, We buy only small volumes... IT DOESN't EXPLAIN the 10 pesos per liter difference... if the Difference is only 2-4 pesos per liter higher for CEbu City GASOLINE compared to Singapore..... I can accept that....

your Wiki Link even provided the list of ADDITIVES.... Benzene (which is now banned since it can cause cancer),Toulene(also banned for the same reasons). Ethanol is also an additive.

Gasoline have additives which can alter their OCTANE LEVELS.... So its the PRICE of the additive which will increase the price of the GASOLINE.
of course...wa man ko nakiglalis ana...

naa pay daghan factors sa formula bro other than forex...increase crude oil price per barrel, increase cost of transport, increase cost of refining, OPEC changes, etc... not to mention the oil companies' hedging of the US dollar.

anyway, to reiterate, this is also worth considering and should be given more weight on this issue:

"Prices of petroleum products are high because the market is controlled by foreign-owned oil companies that agree on the prices of their products. Congress tried to break the monopoly by passing a law decontrolling the downstream oil industry and allowing more players to come in so that free-market competition will force prices down. But while other countries which decontrolled their downstream oil industries allowed an indefinite transition period to give new players time to be able to compete, Congress gave a six-month transition period, which then President Fidel Ramos made worse by shortening further to one month.

So, what happened? While there are a number of new players, they are so puny in comparison to the Big 3 that they cannot compete, making decontrol a farce. That is why every now and then all the oil companies raise their prices almost at the same time and at the same rates. "

Meaning, our OIL DEREGULATION LAW needs a new facelift...

i was hoping someone would be able to present some numbers how the Big 3 came up with their own effective price per liter...

for me, exchange rate is not everything.

Here's a slice of Mr. Habilito's comments re this issue:

    NO FREE LUNCH
    Why oil prices are rising

    By Cielito Habito

"MANILA, Philippines--LAST TIME we saw petroleum prices rise rapidly (in 2005), our economy slowed down, overall prices shot up, and joblessness rose. World crude oil prices had shot up then from around $30 per barrel to above $60.
Another round of petroleum product price increases is now upon us....
    Supply and demand...
    Natural forces...
    Supply factors...

    Conspiracy?
But many are unconvinced that oil price movements are entirely the result of natural market forces. Apart from the IMF study mentioned above, a favorite suspect appears to be the Bush administration, whose alleged ties to the Texas-based US oil industry lead critics to believe that government moves on the SPR are actually meant to benefit the industry. The SPR had been raised from 300 to 700 million barrels in recent years, and this year the Bush administration has further decided to boost it further to 1.5 billion barrels. The problem is, US government purchases for the reserve, amounting to about 125,000 barrels a day, have added significantly to market demand, pushing prices higher than they would be. The arguments are too complicated to explain here, but Googling "oil price manipulation" on the Internet would give you sampling of all the conspiracy theories that are going around. And I haven't even begun to talk of alleged manipulation within our country itself.

Conspiracy or not, oil prices are on the rise and the effects on the economy will be significant. While the peso appreciation helps cushion the impact, the numbers tell the story: a peso rise from 56 to 43 per dollar is an appreciation of 23 percent, but an oil price rise of $60 to $100 per barrel is a rise of 66 percent. "Talong-talo pa rin." (We're still on the losing end).
