USC preys on St. Francis
Sunstar Cebu
Thursday, October 25, 2007
THE University of San Carlos Warriors displayed their stubbornness once more when they overcame a double-digit deficit to hack out an 85-83 overtime sneaker over the highly-touted St. Francis of Assisi in the 2007 University Games at the West Negros College Gym in Bacolod City yesterday.
The Warriors finished second in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. but they showcased a strength no other team had shown when they stretched the University of the Visayas to five games in the best-of-five finals series, a first in Cesafi history. The St. Francis cagers, on the other hand, are owners of two championship titles in their own league—the Universities and Colleges Athletic Association.
In yesterday’s game, it was the the Warriors who showed the heart of a champion. They were face-to-face with defeat when St. Francis dictated the game’s tempo and built an 18-point lead behind Leomar Losentes.
After regrouping at halftime, the Warriors turned the game around in their favor behind the surprising attack of new player Joven Cortez. With USC star players Enrico Llanto and Nino Ramirez finding their groove back, the Warriors managed to overturn the 18-point deficit to a 10-point lead towards the end of the final quarter.
USC’s scorching run, however, was put to a screeching halt when St. Francis forced the game into overtime.
Extension
In the extension, USC shifted into overdrive to eventually squeeze St. Francis out of all its steam. USC’s Ramirez said that their forwards Eddie Bakker and Gino Gallarde were able to keep the St. Francis scorers at bay.
USC was leading by a hairline, 84-83 in the final three seconds, when St. Francis defenders sent Ramirez to the free throw line. Ramirez then halved his charities to assure the victory.
Llanto, who is the only player to win back-to-back MVP titles in the Cesafi, led USC as he scored 25 points. Ramirez added 20, while Cortez scattered 18 markers.
USC still has two games left to play, which will determine whether they make it to the semifinal round.
Meanwhile, the University of San Jose-Recoletos continue to figure prominently in their bracket in the volleyball competition as it sailed to the quarterfinal round yesterday.
The USJ-R squad of coach Grace Antigua continue to refuse its opponents to win a single set as it won three straight games in the same shutout fashions.
Tuesday night, USJ-R defeated Silliman University, 25-11, 25-11, 25-12 and yesterday, it mirrored the same feat when it trounced Iloilo Doctors’ College (IDC), 25-21, 25-
15 and 25-14 for the quarterfinals slot.
Against Silliman, Antigua said that her troops performed their best, but in their game against IDC, three players stood out among the rest. Captain Julette Marikit took her place in the steering wheel and drove the team to victory with her picture-perfect form from the service lane.
Aside from Marikit, Michelle Simbajon, who returned after an injury, and Joy Bonita also scored service aces to steer the team to victory.
However, Antigua said they still have room for improvement.
“We need to work on the execution of our plays,” said Antigua.
The team, which is backed by M. Lhuillier Sports Development Foundation, is already assured of a slot to the quarterfinals, where it will become a battle between the top two teams in all four brackets. USJ-R will next face College of St. Benilde and Antigua said that if they win, they will top the bracket and their chances to make it to the finals will be bolstered. (MCB)
Update sa Fil-foreign Warriors prospect, ato butangan codename: Project Epsilon
hehehe, he is going to obtain his certification as master trainer today, that means, anytime after today he should be leaving for the Philippines. As per conversation I had with him last night, he said his mom is trying to get tickets for next Friday,so that is November 2 and he should have shrugged off jetlag I hope by Monday when I plan to get him to the USC Gym.
We all know nothing is official yet until the player gets enrolled in the school, so we should understand how cautiously we should be dealing with this as other schools' scouts might be on the prowl. Rest assured however, Project Epsilon is more bent to become a Warrior owing to the fact that he once wanted to try out for USC last year.
One more good news is he has experience playing center for the All-Filipino league they have abroad so that should at least give us a bit of an inside presence. A caveat however is that the kid is coming off an injury but he has had a long rest so he assured me that the injury should not bother him much now.
Im not too sure if he still can beat the deadline for the VAAA roster since that VAAA tourney starts Nov. 10. Fair enough, he was aware nothing was official yet and would like to take a look around so it would probably help if we can have a good welcome for him once he gets here.
He most probably will take a course in Education(PE major) or is that Nutrition and Dietetics program still existing? These were the courses he would most likely be interested in.
One more thing, he would also like to meet his elementary classmates over at the Sotero Cabahug Forum for Literacy in Consolacion, circa 1996-97. Please let us know if there are any of you who have attended that school.
Lastly, i dunno if this is feasible: he really wanted to play some pick-up games with the Warriors while he is here because he wants to get a good feel of the competition. I think one of his greatest motivations is beating UV, so that should pump us up a bit more. He wanted to play a friendly match with UV but I told him I can't promise anything.
