Real Madrid romps to 5-0 win over MLS stars
August 23,2005
MADRID, Spain (Ticker) - Landon Donovan has starred in both the MLS and European soccer. On Tuesday night, he got a firsthand look at the gap between the two, which appeared as wide as the Atlantic Ocean.
Spanish League power Real Madrid rolled to a lopsided 5-0 victory over a squad of MLS All-Stars as David Beckham scored on a free kick and fellow international superstar Ronaldo added a pair of trademark goals.
Before the game at Santiago Bernabeu stadium, Donovan said the Americans were here to do more than stargaze.
"We have not had the best preparation because we only arrived on Monday and we are playing today," he told a local newspaper. "However, neither do we have any pressure on us because it is not an official game, so we have to go on the pitch and try and enjoy things.
"We have not come to Spain to watch how well Madrid's star players perform. We want to compete and to win. We have our minds set on playing a good game and we want to win it."
The Americans did not come close against Real Madrid, which used a loaded lineup of Beckham, Ronaldo, Raul, Roberto Carlos and Zinedine Zidane. However, much attention was focused on Jonathan Woodgate, who made his long-awaited debut for the Spaniards after missing 16 months with a muscle problem.
The former Newcastle and Leeds United defender came on in the 85th minute to an ovation and touched the ball on just three occasions. He will play again in a practice game Wednesday.
Beckham curled a 22-yard free kick that went in off the post to open the scoring in the 23rd minute. Two runs by Ronaldo followed by unstoppable shots on either side of halftime put the result beyond doubt.
Jose Maria Guti and Raul solved MLS goalkeeper Matt Reis in the final 10 minutes to close the scoring.
Real Madrid secure option on Brazil defender Cicinho
MADRID, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Real Madrid have reached an agreement with Sao Paulo that gives them an option to sign Brazil defender Cicinho.
The Primera Liga club said the deal would allow them to buy the 25-year-old attacking right back in the future if they wanted to.
Real signed Uruguay right back Carlos Diogo from River Plate as cover for Spain international Michel Salgado last month.
Cicinho, who was part of the Brazil side that crushed Argentina 4-1 to win the Confederations Cup in June, had been linked with several other European clubs including Manchester United, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus.
MADRID, Aug 27 (Reuters) - New signing Robinho and centre-back Jonathan Woodgate have been included in Real Madrid's 20-strong squad to face promoted Cadiz in their opening league match of the season on Sunday.
Robinho, who completed his $30-million move to Real from Santos on Friday, trained with his new team mates including fellow Brazil internationals Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and Julio Baptista for the first time on Saturday.
Real boss Vanderlei Luxemburgo, who also coached Robinho at Santos, said the 21-year-old would not start the game against Cadiz but could make an appearance.
Woodgate, who was sidelined for his first season at Real because of a thigh injury, made his debut for Real when he was given a brief four-minute run-out at the end of the pre-season friendly against the MLS All-Stars on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old will not play against Cadiz but will travel with his team mates as part of Luxemburgo's plans for his gradual introduction after his 16-month injury lay-off.
England striker Michael Owen, whose future at the Bernabeu is still in the balance after an offer from Newcastle United and possible interest from Liverpool, was also included in the squad.
.......real is now a "young" team. They are securing their future. They got Ramos a 19 year old defender. They are now balanced team. Young and old alike. buth both with experience. They now have triple R, ronaldo, robinho and raul, hehehehe
Owen out...
but Robinho in..yipeeeee!!!

Bad news for REAL
Zidane likely out for three weeks
September 8, 2005
MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid's French star Zinedine Zidane will be out of action for some three weeks after suffering a groin strain in Wednesday's crucial 2006 World Cup qualifying win over Republic of Ireland in Dublin, club medical staff said.
Zidane only returned to international duty a month ago after initially retiring from the French national side which he inspired to the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.
Wednesday's 1-0 win, courtesy of a goal by Thierry Henry, means France are right back in the hunt for a place in the 2006 finals in Germany.
Also likely on the sidelines for Sunday's match at home to Celta Vigo will be Brazil striker Ronaldo, who likewise is carrying a groin injury.
Celta shock slack Real Madrid
September 10, 2005
MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid were distinctly lacking the samba style that had been expected from the Spanish giants fielding Brazilians Ronaldo and Robinho and slumped to a 3-2 home defeat by Celta Vigo.
The decisive goal had shades of Geoff Hurst's famous strike in the 1966 World Cup final when Celta's Uruguayan international Fabian Canobbio sent a thunderous shot crashing into the cross bar and down across the line.
No one was quite sure whether Canobbio's effort after 77 minutes had crossed the line apart from linesman Luis Gutierrez, who signalled the goal that gave Celta their winner.
