After you apply the wash, make sure to clean up any places where you don't want the wash to go. As for hand varnishing, I suppose you can do that but I'm not sure if you can thin it with Pledge+water. Test it on a piece of sprue that's been painted to be sure.

Spraycans have been my choice for topcoating my minis and I haven't tried spraying a gloss before matte before. The way I see it, the Pledge in the paint will act like a gloss, so that's why I just spray matte right away.

@jumps: That or selectively apply wash right? Bai, favor, if you're going to the Robot Fiesta this afternoon at Ayala, can you bring your earliest and latest painted Space Marine? I just want to see them for inspiration. Like if jumps suck the first time and became better, then I would too. He he.

I'll also bring my first painted Space Marine. I'll just protect it with a bubble wrap. Objectively evaluate it and hit me ... er, with comments.

Update: Oh, one last thing (for now), if you don't apply gloss, what do you use for the decals? Mr. Mark Setter and Mr. Mark Softer or equivalent?

Oh yeah, I forgot you're applying decals. Just paint the gloss on the areas you will put the decals, then the setter/softener, and last, seal with gloss before you apply matte. I'll also try to make it this afternoon at Ayala.

@jumps: Thanks. About the gloss prior matte. Yes, there is a huge difference. If I apply matte directly, the painted surface is automatically aged That's what I did with Neue Ziel since I don't know how to age deliberately.

This close and you can see the painting imperfections but using our naked eyes, they're virtually invisible. However, I'd still like to achieve skills that would allow me to paint minis perfectly even when seen with a close up filter or macro lens.

You might want to glue the boltgun to the hand before painting next time, or apply less glue.

Still ad-hoc, my WH40K workflow is. Plan better next time, I will.

Great it would be, to have Star Wars minis to paint. There are but already painted they are. So unfortunate that is.

1. Attach shoulder guards

2. Apply gloss varnish

3. Apply Ultramarine decals on the shoulder pads

4. Apply matte varnish

Highlighting leaves a lot to be desired. Well, this is my first mini
