The Philippines has the potential to become one of the top tourist destinations in the world. You already have the most important quality in a wonderful and friendly people who speak English better than most native English speaking people.

What I think needs to improve is infrastructure, like roads and hotels in the more outlying areas which are great to visit, but getting there and staying there is a problem right now. I think the last thing you need is more tourists and no where but Cebu and its surrounding resorts to stay in. No one wants to travel along bumpy roads at 20mph for 6 hours to reach another part of the Island. Roads and better hotels/motels in outlying areas need to be improved to get tourists to explore more of the wonders that the Islands have to offer. Of course, that's a government issue so whether anything will be done about it is another matter.

You do not want to spoil places like Bohol, Malapscual or Borocay and over-populate these places. They need to retain their 'native' feel and to not become just another typical beach resort.

Also, tourists do not want to feel that they are being ripped off by taxi drivers, porters etc etc. When i took the boat to Bohol with my g/f we were charged extra for our baggage before we loaded it as they said it weighed too much. I'm going on a weeks vacation, i have to bring clothes and scuba gear with me!! Charged by porters for carrying it from the taxi, charged for having someone carry it to the boat, and then the same on the other end. This need to better organised

from what i see.. it's ok in these sense

    1. exposure, I think this is good so that people will not be so ignorant so people will understand each other better and avoid conflicts. Some may think that our culture is already too tainted.. I think it's a good chance to show and remember our own culture.

    2. money

    3. Cebu's development... more or less it will help with the country's economy

What I don't really like is the local people tend to overcharge these people... like what free healer said... I have relatives that from the states.. and we went around some places.. I kinda notice that the prices were expensive.. "tourist" prices i would like to call it.. it effects alot man gud.. let's say naay couple na ni visit.. human gi tikasan. ang mo gawas ana negative then pag uli nila obviously mo ask gud na "how's your trip?" or unsa then ang tubag is something negative then ang mga potential tourist di nalang mo anhi.. thus pulling the Philippines down..

well, in every place you visit, be it local or international, there are always things that you don't like or can't tolerate based on your personal norms & judgment.

if i go to NYC, yes i like the place and the people...but there are always some bad things that go with what you experience are good things. like their parking fees...it's just way too expensive. and their winter...too uncomfortable for me. but hey, i like NYC!

I agree with most of the complaints that I hear regarding abusive or otherwise rude behavior by tourists and/or foreign residents. But there are other ways ways of dealing with rude behavior... and the notion of deportation over a minor misbehavior is an inappropriate over-reaction and quite frankly, an overused threat. Deal with the "ugly" on a case by case basis... There are always bad apples in every bunch, be they tourists or locals. Let's accept the fact that we are all guilty of less than perfect behavior at times. The benefits of increased tourism far outweigh the negatives, as long as the host country prepares itself for the increased volume by anticipating that there will be occasional cultural "clashes" along the way. Thanks for listening.

i agree w/ you that the deportation thingy is somewhat an inappropriate overreaction and an over-used threat, but i think there are clear cut policies regarding that. i don't think that just because of some rude behavior, a foreign tourist could just be easily deported. that's a wrong notion. a foreign tourist could be detained in jail for misbehavior but not deported.

i agree that the benefits far outweigh the negatives. the increase in volume of tourists should also prompt us for increased police visibility, stricter implementation against children & women abuse, better infrastructure, more hotels, better services, more cultural tolerance...
