knowing what you do is the most effective. no matter how good the software is, the weakest link is you. i've seen a lot of customers with more than 3 anti-malware apps and yet they were infected.. chances are they don't like to be annoyed by the pop-ups asking them if they will allow whatnot or just carelessly opens attachments from emails.

but just to satisfy the OP's question here's what I use:
AVG Free AV
AVG antispyware
AVG anti-rootkit
AdAware Free
HijackThis
Spybot Search and Destroy

specialized apps:
combofix
smitfraudfix

PCCillinIS, NortonIS is not recommended for slower systems.

Avast

free update for both..
I suggest Avast because of the scheduled boot time scan...slower tho compared to AVG but kasing effective..

Kulang ra bitaw ang AVG, they're still not up to par. Among the freeware antivirus the best is still Avira followed by avast!

Firewall nothing beats COMODO karon.
