@punk: Sir, ive used 70-200 f4L, you wont regret gyud sad. for the price and quality, its a great buy! but sooner or later, your need will grow and f4 wont be enough.. so now, i upgraded to 70-200 f2.8. So in my opinion, i would highly advice that you just go buy directly the 70-200 f2.8

but also, as mark yap said.. f4 also has some advantage, specially the weight. so if you dont want a heavy lens an f4 would do.. If your going for the f4, go for the f4 IS. hope that helps!

btw, 2.8 is worth the bucks!

I'd like to ask for tips on testing a lens before buying one.
I have no idea how to check if the copy i'm getting is a
good one and not a lemon.

I've read that quality control of third party lenses is not as
good as those of the original makers (Canon and Nikon that is),
so it is possible to get a bad copy. I'm particularly concern about
sharpness, contrast, focusing, chromatic aberration, distortion
and vignetting.
