Most everybody I know from that era, including my parents say it wasn't that bad at all. It was relatively safer, according to them. My Dad who is a Mindanao native btw. The leftist were crying foul in the guise of human rights, which by the way was fronted by leftists themselves. The only people who's rights were grossly violated were subversives from the Huks and NPA--what they didn't say was that the previous Quirino, Magsaysay, Garcia, and Macapagal administrations fought the communists in the same manner.

Actually, The Filipino and American defense of Bataan was significant in the Pacific theater. If you look at the bigger picture, and military historians would agree, that had the defense fallen sooner the British Commonwealth of Australia wouldn't have been able to prepare, and the rest of the U.S. bases in the Pacific would have been quickly overrun by the Japanese--counter-attack would be difficult. So Marcos was correct for calling it "Araw ng Kagitingan", because despite the allies having numerical superiority, they were sorely outgunned by the Japanese--yet managed to hold out for 3+ months.

If only Aquinos economic team were as good as his propaganda team, the Philippines would be the richest country in Asia by the time his term ends. Sad but true...
