Paging Githyanki! Asa na ang UPDATES ani uy!
Hey guys! I apologize for the very very (did I say very?) late update on this thread. We've been having meetings and planning sessions for quite sometime for this.
Here's my progress report on the project...
September 22
Initial meeting with Gov. Gwen. Present were Rotary Club of Cebu Fuente, Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry, My Shelter Foundation, JCI Mandaue, and of course Illac Diaz himself. Surprisingly, everything went great! Governor gave her full support for the project and is signing an Executive Order to include this project as part of the E-GWEN score card. She brought in RAFI Foundation to help out with organizing a run that will serve as a rallying program for this project.
September 27
Second meeting with the Governor. Prior to the meeting, the team were already setting up meetings and soliciting from potential sponsors. One corporate sponsor; Insular Life; showed interest in promoting this project. They offered an office at their building to serve as the project's head quarters until the completion of the project. Illac also announced that Stream Global is sponsoring 20,000 solar bottles to serve as the first batches to be installed here in Cebu.
RAFI Foundation presented the mechanics of the run. The run will be FREE, aside from the empty PET bottles you will bring during registration and during the race. The run will be called, "Plant a Light". This is to continue their existing project the "Run to Plant" in Talisay. Will post the mechanics of the run after we've finalized the details.
Here's the exiciting news! National Geographic will be coming in to film a feature segment about the project! Not only that, we're also inviting CNN, BBC, Reuters, and United Nations to come in and be part of this revolutionary project! ^_^
Here's the video of the meeting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx6YZqJg5IA
October 3
We tried our work at making some of the solar bottles. Dang, it wasn't easy at first. The hardest part was cutting the cirlce at the center of the corrugated sheet without bending it! Another problem we encountered was how to fit in the PET bottles snuggly on the corrugated sheet. But at the end of the day, we were able to make a couple of samples for demonstration in the near future!
October 20
This will be our next meeting with the Governor. She called a general assembly of all the DepEd heads to promoted this project and incorporate the idea into schools, gymnasiums and even churches.
October 28
Governor herself called a general assembly to all the Cebu mayors at CICC. She will be presenting the 2012 E-GWEN Score Card along with the Solar Bottle Light Project.
Wish me luck guys! Will be preparing my presentation for these dates. Hope I won't choke. hahaha!
Other important dates to take note:
November 4 - Press Conference
November 19 - Volunteer Day (We will be teaching how to make these solar bottles)
November 26 - Kick-Off Party (A campaign ain't complete without a party right!?)
December 10 - Plant A Light Run (A province-wide simultaneous run, feature run will be in Talisay)

Officially this Cebu project is named, "Suga Suga sa Sugbu" and it's a component project under the "Isang Litrong Liwanag" initiated by Illac Diaz and MyShelter Foundation Inc.
This is a sustainable lighting project which aims to bring the Eco-friendly solar bottle bulb to low-income communities nationwide. Designed and developed by students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The Solar Bottle Bulb is a device based on the principles of Appropriate Technologies- a concept that provides simple and easily replicable technologies that address basic needs and easily replicable in developing communities.

National Events:
October 28, 2011 - Cagayan De Oro, Mindanao Leg
The event will begin with a fun run of 2,000 people in costumes to raise funds for installing the first large scale solar bulbs in Mindanao. The twist is that there will be a solar bulb installation after the run with the volunteers still in costume.
Through the Rotary, solar bulbs will be installed all around Northern Mindanao.
November 30, 2011 - Metro Manila, Luzon Leg
The event will begin with the tour of the fireflies (Tour of the Fireflies) to help bring thousands of solar bulbs to Metro Manila. A total of 17 cities will be covered.
December 10, 2011 - Cebu, Visayas Leg
All of the above events are to raise awareness and install 100,000 solar bulbs in the island. Thousands of runners will wear Santa clause hats during the run. Same thing with installation of solar bulbs with Santa in hats on the shanty roofs. During December 2011, the money raised will be used to pay penitentiary workers at Cebu's biggest jail to make the 100,000 bulbs as a livelihood. Once finished this will be delivered to the 51 towns all over the province.
We are aiming to make this project recognized internationally as Asia's largest (and probably first) sustainable grassroots green technology.
December 2011 - Cape Town, South Africa
Philippines (through MyShelter Foundation) will be one of two honored guests presenting to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change, the start and spread of the "Isang Litrong Liwanag" (A Liter of Light) in the Philippines in front of 154 Nations in Durban, South Africa. South Africa upbeat about UN climate change talks - People's Daily Online
A whole nation given access to sustainable light, the Philippines will serve as an example to the world of how sharing a simple idea can change the world.
