the evolution of our brain.. then who knows we are really getting smarter than those people in the past. It's just that we are unable to use our brain efficiently.

major discoveries and breakthroughs of the present existed because past discoveries shed light or gave an idea.definitely we are evolving and getting smarter.i just hope its for the better purpose.

of course we are better off, than Einstein's generation humanity's summation of knowledge always adds up it doesn't decrease.

The fallacy of the single cause, also known as joint effect or causal oversimplification, is a logical fallacy of causation that occurs when it is assumed that there is a single, simple cause of an outcome when in reality it may have been caused by a number of only jointly sufficient causes.

my bad prof, i misinterpreted the thread starter's question. I thought he meant to ask if our generation was generally smarter than Einstein himself, not einstein's generation.

I think people are equating intelligence with achievements, which is kind of unfair.

I think this generation is smarter (but only by standing in the giant's shoulder), but scientific achievements just become harder. As an illustration, if you put some number of needles in some haystack, the first generation of 'needle finders' will always find the most number of needles and becomes less and less with subsequent generation. In a sea of knowledge, human beings can only discover so much.

Gone are the days when brilliant discoveries could be made by a lone scientist. We could say most things that could be discovered by one man and with limited tools are already discovered. Nowadays, we need collaboration and 'big' tools like LHC to discover something new.
