Thread: Gardenia Cebu

Gardenia goes further south in the Philippines.

Gardenia, the country’s tastiest and highest-quality bread maker, is planning to wet the appetite of Dabawenyos soon.

Gardenia Bakeries Philippines, Inc. is under talks to expand its factory operations to Davao City. So far, it has put up its high-tech bread factories in Luzon and Cebu.

The high-class bread maker is known for its “good taste, freshness, softness, oven-baked aroma and nutritive value”. I personally like their Classic White Bread — which is their bestseller — because it’s soooo soft and flavorful. In fact, their slogan is accurate: “So good…you can even eat it on its own”.

As of this writing, Gardenia Breads are made available through NCCC Mall and Robinsons Supermarket, but always get depleted fast because of the high demand. I have even tried the LBC Gardenia Package, so that I can taste their breads again.

Gardenia Bakeries is expanding its operation in the country by putting up a bread plant in Cebu to cater to the needs of the Cebu and Northern Mindanao market.

Gardenia’s new plant features giant horizontal mixers from the United States, an automated dough divider-rounder and intermediate proofer equipment from the Netherlands, a tunnel oven with a race track bread cooling conveyor from Germany, and an automated slicer and bread bagger from the United States.

Gardenia will utilize the finest ingredients from all over the world to ensure Cebuanos that they can have the same high quality and great tasting Gardenia loaf breads enjoyed in the country as well as in Singapore and Malaysia, where the brand is the market leader.

The Cebu plant is expected to produce 2,000 loaves per hour or a daily capacity of nearly 50,000 loaves. Among the wide array of Gardenia bread products that will be initially offered are Classic White Bread, High Fiber Wheat Bread and some flavored loaves.

Currently, Gardenia bread is the leader in Metro Manila with a market share exceeding 65% based on Nielsen retail data. It is widely distributed all over Luzon. Likewise, the company covers the Western part of Visayas including Mindoro, Panay and Negros islands and Eastern part of the Visayas serving the major islands of Samar and Leyte by utilizing the country’s Roll-On Roll-Off (RORO) nautical highway through its fleet of company-owned feeder trucks.

“Unfortunately, it takes a longer time to ship breads to Cebu and since Gardenia guarantees freshness in all its delivery, the only way to serve them is to put a plant in Cebu,” declared Nestor Constancia, Marketing and Sales Manager.

He further stated that the Cebu plant will also serve the bread requirements of Bohol, Cagayan de Oro, Malaybalay, Butuan and Iligan. Gardenia’s unique distribution system will utilize a new fleet of feeder trucks and delivery vans within these cities.

The demand in the Visayas and Mindanao markets pushes Gardenia to rapidly embark in this Cebu plant investment.

“We received a lot of requests, emails and letters from customers insisting that we fast track our plans to operate there. They are already aware of the brand as some people bring Gardenia breads to their provinces as pasalubong to their family and in addition, they are able to purchase it through LBC,” said Simplicio Umali Jr., Gardenia Philippines president.

He also stated that LBC has been very helpful in making Gardenia products available all over the country as consumers can order Gardenia from LBC branches for delivery right at their doorsteps at very reasonable cost.

This expansion plan will generate 100 jobs for the locals of Cebu. Its HR team has hired employees that are now being trained in the company’s modern plant facility in Laguna before they will be deployed to their respective jobs in Cebu.

“We fast tracked our hiring process because successful candidates really need to undergo intensive training especially on our most advanced baking technique, HACCP and ISO procedures,” said Umali.

Since I discovered the Gardenia Butterscotch Bread, I can't get enough of it. Soft, fluffy and caramel-ly, it is “Really, really good!!!” I love toasting it and spreading some butter over it (salted would be best!) to intensify the butterscotch taste. If you haven’t tried this, go get some! A loaf costs RM4, and there are 12 slices inside.

    A look at Gardenia's background

In early 1997, QAF Limited through Gardenia International (S) Pte Ltd established Gardenia Bakeries (Philippines), Inc. and started construction of its bakery plant in the Laguna International Industrial Park (LIIP), Biñan, Laguna. It is a multinational company with operations in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and other countries in Asia. Gardenia Philippines began its operations in 1998 with a state-of-the-art bread factory rated as one of the most modern large-scale bread manufacturing facilities in the country. Its major equipment come from the best bakery equipment suppliers from Germany, Holland, UK and USA, making its plant the most advanced baking facility in the country.

Gardenia Philippines offers a wide array of superior bakery products including white and wheat breads, health breads, flavored loaves, pandesal and snack items like snack cakes, muffins and toasts. Gardenia breads are known for their good taste, freshness, softness, oven-baked aroma and nutritive value. The popular Classic White Bread is cholesterol free and bromate free, has zero transfat, and is vitamin and mineral fortified, exceeding DOH recommendations. Its product slogan "So good...you can even eat it on its own" best describes the product benefits.

Gardenia prides itself in being the leader in its field by introducing several firsts in the bread industry. Gardenia is the first in the country to use a unique automated G-lock on the packaging to seal its bread products and retain freshness. This plastic clip is placed on the "neck" of the bread package with the "Best Before" date and retail price printed on it. Our breads are packed in colorful and informative packaging displayed in an upright fashion unlike the conventional flat display.

Gardenia likewise boasts of a unique distribution system that is unmatched in the industry. Adhering to its international policy of keeping only fresh stocks on the store shelves, we deliver freshly-baked breads to the stores on the same day they are produced. With an extensive distribution network, we deliver everyday, seven days a week. This means that you will always have fresh bread when you need it. All unsold breads in store shelves are pulled out and replaced with only newly baked ones during every day of delivery.

This combination of superior product quality, advanced bread-making technology and extensive system of distribution reflects the consumer-oriented vision of Gardenia Philippines that brings consumers the highest level of product satisfaction in the bakery industry today.

Gardenia as a food company that manufactures a wide variety of breads, has the vision of becoming"THE PREMIER COMPANY IN THE BAKING INDUSTRY." Being a consumer-focused and branded food company, Gardenia is singularly driven and aligned behind delivering superior consumer value through providing consumers with superior brands. The Gardenia trademark means value and is respected all over Asia.

By delivering uncompromising excellence in product quality and service, we consistently drive the market forward, setting standards for the industry to follow. At Gardenia, we make the science of baking an art.

Gardenia has been doing business here in the Philippines for over a decade. It took them so long to expand outside Luzon (well obviously Luzon itself is so wide) and now they are in a position to distribute their offerings in the Southern Philippines in the near future. On top of that, they'll be investing in the Visayas and Mindanao and will create new jobs in the regions.

It's already a tradition in many companies in Luzon that Gardenia is the prime choice of bread for snacks. I noticed that every time I get assigned there.

In our Cebu office, we make special orders with Gardenia to deliver to us employees their special bread (all the way from their Laguna plant).

Gardenia is also open to sponsoring corporate snacks and events. Don't hesitate to have your company approach them for such opportunities.

Once Gardenia's Cebu plan operates and start delivering lots of bread locally, our company will no longer worry about long distance transport of Gardenia bread into our office.
