I think mermaids and mermans exist.. But not as a flesh but similar to Agtas, Fairies, white ladies, and engkato..

If in land we have engkantos and dwendes which are heavily inhabited by mankind, how much more beneath the seas and ocean, where it is silent, cold, and only aquatic animals reside...

twobol2002: is this a real creature or a work of art? very interesting man gud ang mga details, dili katong typical features (except for the tail) nga gina-expect nimo to see sa usa ka mermaid ug merman....but details that are expected for a marine dwelling creature. can you tell us the site where we can see the rest of the pic?

this is actually a picture of a rusalka..

According to Slavic folklore, a Rusalka is a water spirit or water nymph. They are the souls of young women or girls who died an unnatural or violent death. If the girl was murdered in or close to a lake, she would became a Rusalka and inhabit that particular lake. Rusalkas appear as beautiful young women who try to lure men into the water, where they will drown them. Rusalki can also be found on nights when there is a new moon; dancing on meadows or open places in the woods. With their shrill laughter they are capable of killing humans. A Rusalka's fate can be undone by avenging her death.

Whenever people would bathe in the lake they put fern in their hair so that the rusalka would not pull them under and drown them.

which brings to mind...the infamous Philippine Kugtong...
one was thought to inhabit the waters in Mactan... near General Milling..

The kugtong, as far as I know, is just a very huge grouper fish...
And I have read that the fish lapulapu, as it is known in Luzon, is called pugapo in Cebu.
In the olden times, however, it was known as kugtong when it matured into a size big enough to swallow a man.

A kugtong is a mythological creature believed by legend to have inhabited the Philippine waters especially in “kaNtilado” areas (coastal deep sea). Popular in the Visayas and Mindanao region, especially in Zamboanga, some say it is a big fish that has been living in the deep sea for decades. It was even published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer that it was responsible for the death of Abu Sabaya. Fishermen and foreign and local tourists who have disappeared in Philippine waters are believed to have been taken or eaten by kugtongs.

This kinda reminds me of how "Dugong" that character from the teleserye "Marina" came to be.. hehe

The only experience I have with large fish was at our beach in Benolho, Albuera, Leyte...
There is this "pantalan" (pier) across the other side of the river where half of a sunken ship is found..
Every afternoon, a barge from Danao, Cebu usually docks at 4 p.m. and everytime we see the ship we usually come out of the water, for fear that some lost marine creatures or a "kugtong" might be following it...
And in 2005, while my uncle was still in the water, we spotted this huge fin about 4 feet a few meters behind him and then this HUGE tail that came out just as fast... it was a shark AND a whale that was feeding on the small fish caugh by the nets of the fishermen..
The pulling of the 'baling" was postponed because we had to let the big fish go since it will destroy the nets if the people forced it out...
