Calendar of activities for Oct. 25 Barangay, SK polls out

MANILA, Sept. 1 – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has reminded prospective candidates for the Oct. 25 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls that the filing of the Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) will be from Oct. 1 to 13.

Based on Comelec Resolution 9019, the candidates are advised to file their COCs with the secretary of the Barangay Council who, in turn, has the ministerial duty to receive and acknowledge such documents.

Section 7 of the Barangay Election Act of 1982 states that “no person shall be eligible to be a Barangay official unless he/she is a citizen of the Philippines, a registered voter and actual resident of the Barangay for at least six months immediately preceding the election, able to read and write, is at least 21 years of age on the date of the election, and who is not otherwise disqualified by law.”

The resolution also states that the campaign period will be from Oct. 14 to 23, both for Barangay and SK candidates.

The election period will begin on Sept. 25 until Nov. 10.

During the election period, prohibited acts include alteration of precincts, establishment of new precincts, illegal release of prisoners, carrying of firearms, maintenance of private armies, transfer of public employees, suspension of public officials, and the use of personnel security or bodyguards.

Casting of votes on election day will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Comelec said the counting and canvassing of votes and the proclamation of winning candidates will start immediately after the casting of ballots. (PNA)
