for full frame sympre 17-40L4 or 16-35L2.8 is the way to go.
if you are sticking with crop body 10-22 is very good optically though not built like those L lenses.

however i would also greatly consider the new Sigma EX 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM. hypersonic motor for quite faster more accurate focusing, fix 3.5 aperture throughout the length of its range. EX is sigmas pro line of lenses similar to canons L series therefore built very good with expensive/better materials yet its price is cheaper than the consumer grade 10-22.

    no it would not...
its built with cheaper material...less rugged...no sealing...far from an L type lens. it needs to be a lot more to get that designation.

this is a clear misunderstanding/misinterpretation on what other people posted online when this lens first came out.
what people ment to point out was the image quality of this consumer grade canon 10-22 efs is so good its comparable that of uwa L lenses.

besides there is no rule that states canon can't build an EFS L lens in the future? EFS only signifies the lens mount thats only 100% compatible with cropped canon bodies so far though not all cropped canon bodies (none efs designation like the canon 10D and D60) support it.

canon already gave an L designation to the lens on the PRO1 prosumer camera. that's not even a DSLR lens.

My main gripe with the new version of Sigma 10-20 is it's 82mm filter size. It's very hard to find these sizes and they are very expensive.
