Don't expect the Philippines to play a prominent part in "Pacific." The First Marines weren't involved in any action in the Philippines.

I hope the bloody Peleliu action finally gets the recognition it deserves on screen. Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima have been covered by other screen offerings but somehow Peleliu always gets overlooked.

As in any war, air and sea battles alone don't win wars. Troops are always needed to take ground and win. The War in the Pacific was no different. On a per-capita basis (on both sides), the Pacific battles were probably a lot bloodier than those fought in Europe. The never-surrender, fight-to-the-last-man tenacity of the Japanese is one big reason why.
    Tamrac,

Found an article about Peleliu , its an interesting small read with sledge in there , a marine that went in during the battle.

    An interesting interview with Spielberg:

Steven Spielberg, Executive Producer of The Pacific, was recently interviewed and discussed the mini-series with film blog website, The Collider.com. When asked about how long it took him to help get Pacific developed, he said the following:

“I would say years. Longer than I actually remember. It was inevitable that we would do The Pacific with HBO because there was such an overwhelming response, not only from the general public that got very involved in Band of Brothers, but we got so much positive mail. At the same time, that mail said, “I was a veteran of the Solomons.” “I fought on Tarawa.” “I was at Midway.” We got so many letters of veterans from the Pacific Theater of Operations, asking us if we could acquit their stories the way we acquitted the stories of the European Theater of Operations.”

Futhermore, when asked about any future plans to develop WWII films, he hinted:

“There are many more stories to tell, and we’re going to tell them.”

What will these films be? Midway? 8th Air Force? German/Russian Theater of War?

There are already excellent movies that cover Midway (the 1976 Charlton Heston and Henry Fonda starrer) as well as the war between Germany and the Soviet Union ("Enemy at the Gates"). With the latter, the scope of the work was specific to one person in Stalingrad. 8th Air Force had "Twelve O' Clock High" but that was done such a long time ago. The more recent "Memphis Belle" was only semi-factual.

But yeah, there are so many stories to tell and even though "Pacific" has yet to come out, I'm eagerly waiting for Spielberg's and Hanks' next gem.

If ever a new movie is made about Midway, a good basis would be the recently published (2005) book titled "Shattered Sword" by Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully. It is extremely well-researched and provides a fresh perspective on Midway beyond the near-canonical narrative most are familiar with. It unearths new facts and debunks old myths about the battle. For the first time, the Japanese side of the battle is taken into account not only from the commanders' perspective but from that of ordinary air- and seamen as well.

The book is generously peppered with diagrams that illustrate the battle. It also has a lot of never before seen photos taken during the battle. A really great read.
