Why I love the Simpsons: The ramblings of a life-deprived single gal with insomnia
1. The writing - consistently funny, witty and smart. It tops all other comedy shows out there when it comes to writing bar none. i like both the low brow humor ("Looking at Uruguay, U...ru...gay. hehehehe"-Homer) to the more subtle humor which most people miss. ("Very well. I must hurry back to my comic book store, where I dispense the insults rather than absorb them"-Comic book guy). I laugh out loud on both sides. I first saw the Simpsons when I was ten years old, now I'm in my mid 20's and I still catch myself watching early episodes and laugh at jokes that I was oblivious to when I was 10 years old. Subtle, subliminal humor is what set this show apart. Most of the time they don't just hand you the jokes with a big glaring sign. It rewards the audience intelligence and attention.
2. Social Relevance - You name it the show has touched on every socio-political issue out there. Just watch the most recent episode of the Simpsons and you're pretty much caught up on whats going on with the world. They're also not afraid to point out people foibles and ignorance and misgivings. From homosexuality to racism to feminism to vegetarianism to materialism to greed to envy to religion, marriage, ***, infidelity all kinds of touchy political situations and the list goes on. And while they do push the envelopes, their delivery is not in a pandering, pretentious, preachy way. They don't take anything seriously, its self-deprecating. Its more like "We're laughing not laughing at you, we're laughing with you." And ultimately they always wrap it up so that you won't feel unsettled and uneasy no matter how touchy the topic may have been.
3. The Simpsons family - over the years the family has evolved from one dimensional characters into full fledged complex beings. Although they do follow stereotypical pattern in their characters the writers always finds interesting ways to give each a bit of humanity and break from the stereotype in ways that are at times surprising and touching. We know that Homer is a clueless, selfish, idiot but we also know that he loves his family and would do anything for them. (buys Lisa a saxophone rather than an air conditioner ,albeit begrudgingly, at the expense of his own personal comfort. Or would crawl back to Mr. Burns to get his job back when Maggie came along). We know Bart is rude and a trouble maker but underneath it all he has a heart and soul ( refused to kill the lizards he helped hatch or his frantic search to regain his soul back). Marge is the face of cool maternal domesticity but she can blow (SUV road rage!). Even little Maggie have shown so much personality just through her pacifier . And Lisa Simpson, out of all the characters in the show, I identify with her the most. I feel her pain. I could go on and dissect Lisa's character but believe me it would be a final thesis in itself. So I'll leave it at that.
4. The Secondary Characters - What I love most about the show is that the stories doesn't always revolve around the main characters. The show has come to a point where even the minor secondary characters are fully evolved and are able to carry an entire story line. Case in point, Comic Book Guy was just a blip in Simpsons universe a few years ago. But the writers crafted that character so well that people remember him and overtime began to develop, gained a fan base and now can totally carry an episode. I think this is the reason why The Simpsons has remained fresh for so long. It gets old when its just all about the Simpson's family all the time. I even think that the show is really at a point where its not "The Simpson's" anymore, its more like "Springfield." The writers have created a world where we know intimate details about characters that we don't see that often but when they show up we have an inkling what they're up to. This is kinda hard for me to explain. I'll tell you this though, I know that when Fat Tony shows up something fishy is going on.
5. Pop-culture reference - I don't even know where to begin the amount of pop-culture reference this show puts on. And again this is evidence of the genius of the writers. I mean, Side Show Bob's prison number is the same as Jean Valjean from Les Miserables. You must know a good deal of Literature to know that or have very good insight to even think of putting it in the same context. Other pop-culture reference?what about that Halloween special where they recreated 'The Raven' or the one episode with 'A Tell Tale Heart' or that X-files episode and I could go on and on. From Shakespeare to Charles Dickens to Harry Potter to Nirvana. The show is consistently on the pulse of (at least) American culture. It has also spawned its own pop culture revolution, I mean, who hasn't sang "Do the Bartman" during their elementary days ( I sure did!). And of course there's the celebrity voice-overs. Every famous person out their wants to do The Simpsons. It has been a rite of passage in celebritydom. I read somewhere that basically says that you know your famous when you've : Been a guest on SNL, have been a question(or is it answer?) on Jeopardy and have done The Simpsons. Those three are the holy grail of celebritydom. I guess my point is that The Simpsons is no longer a passing fad but an integral part of pop-culture one which people will look back and refer to.
6. My Own Life - Yes I've said "cowabunga" and "D'oh" and "Eat my shorts" and yes I have sung Do the Bartman. The reasons I've listed above is what keeps me watching the show faithfully and in turn the show has been imprinted on me consciously and subconsciously. I can't even begin to list the amount of times when something happens and I can automatically relate it to one of the episodes or how many times I quote the show. Like this morning, someone mentioned financial planning and my immediate response without even blinking was "financial panther, eh!' (Bonus points if you know which episode I'm refering to).
