-->source: UP and ABOUT - UPDATE: ABS-CBN withdraws 'Twilight' remake news from site
Either the Kapamilya network is regretting its release of such an immediate statement, it found that its trial balloon popped too soon, or even worse, nakuryente tayo.
That's all just possibilities and assumptions of why it happened. But if you go to the URL of the much-circulated Christmas eve story on ABS-CBN's acquisition of rights to do a local spin-off of the hit vampire series (which I earlier reported and reprinted here), it now reads "Access denied."
Somehow I had an inkling the withdrawal would happen. The story came out in the morning of Dec. 24. By noon, I found it among the headlines in the entertainment section at ABS-CBN News Online's home page. When I checked the home page after posting my report around 2 p.m., the headline was gone. But since the story was still in the Entertainment secion's page then, I put to rest any doubts.
Now it's really gone, more than 24 hours later.
The story's out though. Twilight fans, ABS-CBN watchers, and anyone who cared had already posted the story and their comments (almost all heated) in forums and their Multiply sites and groups. For any possibility of a kuryente (i.e. journalese for being "electrified" with wrong or false news), ABS would have to refute hundreds of netizens who've heard and seen.
The reason I had thoughts ABS could withdraw the story was that it already happened before (check my Obama post). That time, it was a case of bad or premature reporting. Channel 2 reported on Nov. 5, after the U.S. elections, the apparent victory of a Filipina in the Illinois legislature. It was complete with an interview of Aurora Austriaco, the Pinay. The related article soon showed up on the news site.
Reports elsewhere the next few days said though that Austriaco, a Democrat, lost to her long-serving Republican candidate. By then, ABS-CBN withdrew the full-blown article and reported her loss on its evening news.
Austriaco did lose, as seen in the Illinois state election board site. Here's also a political analyst's Dec. 3 take on it. The news allegedly came out through a press release from Austriaco's camp. Apparently the wrong news was only based on results for the city of Chicago and not the entire vote results from Cook county, the district where Austriaco ran for state representative.
Considering the media game, the Takipsilim "mistake" may be interpreted two ways. The remake news could be a trial balloon, a feasibility test by ABS-CBN before buying the rights to see how fans would take it.
Or maybe ABS-CBN, for a lack of strategic thinking, rode on the recent success of the movie here that it quickly decided to release the news. Apparently, Twilight fans had no reason to celebrate. Of course and again, the fire of the rumors could give the lie to any possibility the Kapamilya-Ignite Media deal has yet to pull through.
With all the brouhaha of the already heavy "Twilight" craze, and with the Christmas season in height, it might be best to attend to other more real or more pressing things. Like family affairs, finishing unfinished business, or simply taking stock of 2008 and preparing for 2009.
Again, Merry Christmas.
The very well-done "Takipsilim" poster, also making the rounds among fora but is in no way official, was borrowed from Greg Sabado's repost.
