Use MediaInfo to examine an MKV file or ideally the sample MKV which comes with most scene releases.

There are 3 main characteristics to look for, resolution, profile and reference frames.

If it's 1080p resolution, reference frames > 4 and profile HP@L5.1 then it should not play. Avoid them as you are most likely wasting your bandwidth downloading them.

If it's 720p then reference frames and profile may not matter at all. Most 720p files will play no matter what reference frames or profile.

The closer you get to 720 then the less the reference frames and profile matter, the closer you get to 1080 then the more they matter up to a maximum of 4 on a 1080p file.

thanks for the info. the tv i am planning to get is only up to 720p anyway. ahehe

now i am torn between two media players (pch for network capability or wdtv for bang for the buck). i have the mediagate nmt that plays everything EXCEPT MKV! might consider selling it nalang to generate funds for mkv capable players

I just got myself a Panasonic 42 Plasma and a WDTV for a very decent price. Probably 50% than if you purchase them here. I realized I dont need yet the capability of the PCH.

check out pinoydvd for prices. but i recommend you to get the Xtreamer media player, it uses the latest Realtek 1073 chip. compared to the sigma chip of pch, mas paspas daw ang realtek. besides it cost only 6800 pesos vs 12.5k ang pch-a110. both without hdd.

For me, Bluray is the only way to go...even with an upconverting DVD, PQ is no where near the PQ of blurays... so much more if u purchase those cheap DVDs (C-Interactive) ... once u go Blu, there's no going back ... sakit lang gyud sa bulsa, hahaha

no contest, blue ray is the way but ''NOT THE ONLY WAY TO GO''. see for yourself a full hd compressed mkv file (file size around 15-20GB a movie), you won't see much difference with the blue ray disc.

dvds, errr... that's out of the question coz its only standard definition. upconversion only puts artificial details to a standard def movie to make it look hd but it is still not.
