Use MediaInfo to examine an MKV file or ideally the sample MKV which comes with most scene releases.

There are 3 main characteristics to look for, resolution, profile and reference frames.
If it's 1080p resolution, reference frames > 4 and profile HP@L5.1 then it should not play. Avoid them as you are most likely wasting your bandwidth downloading them.
If it's 720p then reference frames and profile may not matter at all. Most 720p files will play no matter what reference frames or profile.
The closer you get to 720 then the less the reference frames and profile matter, the closer you get to 1080 then the more they matter up to a maximum of 4 on a 1080p file.
