Smart WiFi - the "Wireless Fidelity" or technically known as IEEE 802.11 standard. The 802.11 family currently includes six over-the-air modulation techniques that all use the same protocol. The most popular (and prolific) techniques are those defined by the b, a, and g amendments to the original standard; security was originally included and was later enhanced via the 802.11i amendment. Other standards in the family (c–f, h, j, n) are service enhancements and extensions or corrections to previous specifications. 802.11b was the first widely accepted wireless networking standard, followed (somewhat counterintuitively) by 802.11a and 802.11g. If I'm not mistaken, Smart Wifi uses 802.11b. So let's focus more on 802.11b.Originally Posted by Tamblot
802.11b use the 2.4 Ghz band having a maximum data of 11 Mbit/s and an indoor range of about 30 meters. But in Smart's case, it can propagate up to 2 Km as long as the serving base station has a clear LOS ( line of sight ) to the subscriber's location. As you noticed, Smart's WiFi is advertised as a fixed wireless since once you are homed to a specific base station you can no longer transfer your PC to another location. It's a bit ironic though since WiFi was developed for mobile users. Personally, i would prefer calling Smart's WiFi as "wireless broadband" so as not to confuse it with wifi hotzones. But tecnically speaking, Smart WiFi is still correct since it utilizes 802.11b.
Smart BRO-"bro" definitely stands for broadband but it may as well be a shortcut of "brother". Perhaps a marketing strategy or a branding technique to ride with Pinoy Big Brothers popularity, right? As per research, BRO utilizes the Motorola Canopy Broadband Wireless Platform. It can propagate up to 1.5 km as advertised on their leaflets using the 5.7 GHz. It is different from WiFi since it follows a different standard. I believe its IEEE 802.3. It has a different modulation technique to that of WiFi which i do not wish to elaborate further for it's quite boring. If you observed, WiFi has longer range compared to BRO, it is because of the differences of the frequencies used (WiFi - 2.4GHz; Bro - 5.7GHz).
....hope this one helps!
