we never really learn, do we?
1.) the US military presence in the country is just a tip of the iceberg. its presence is not the protect philippine sovereignty, but to protect US state interests, primarily its military and economic assets, secondarily to act as a supposed deterrent against its 'enemies' (which brings us to the second point)
2.) both US and China know that they cannot resolve any conflict militarily. both depend on each other for survival: the US is the main market for China's manufactured goods. you upset one, you upset another. so why obsess over a hostile military relations between China and the US? and why should the US defend us against our 'enemy' China, if China is a bigger friend to the US than we ever could be?
3.) the US has an existing base in Okinawa, Japan, which is even closer to China. would it be wise to build another one, knowing the financial and political cost that it might incur?
4.) judging from the Okinawan experience, the locals have expressed their disdain to the presence due to controversies that they have managed to embroil themselves in. and even locals on the former Subic and Clark bases still have high incidences of cancer and other ailments allegedly due to toxic substances left behind, not to mention how the supposed 'jobs' that were generated in the city of Olongapo was generally inclined towards the red light district.
let's not focus too much on slogans and instead try and dig deeper.![]()

I hope these americans will bomb the malacañang palace and kill those suckers....
Philippines might be farther compared to Japan but our location provides STATEGIC GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION ( military wise ) .
What happened in OKINAWA is an ISOLATED CASE that erupted because it didnt occured once but three times pa . It was the RAPE issues although ang suspects was punished and still serving time .4.) judging from the Okinawan experience, the locals have expressed their disdain to the presence due to controversies that they have managed to embroil themselves in. and even locals on the former Subic and Clark bases still have high incidences of cancer and other ailments allegedly due to toxic substances left behind, not to mention how the supposed 'jobs' that were generated in the city of Olongapo was generally inclined towards the red light district.
Regarding EMPLOYMENT , yes they generated employment . The people who operates the bases are CIVILIAN CONTRACTORS . They would hire QUALIFIED LOCALS because they for one knows what they are doing and second , labor is cheaper compared to hiring people back home and bringing it here . When we say it became a RED LIGHT DISTRICT , Uncle Sam didnt do that . Its the locals themselves and during that stint , dont blame the presence of the Americnan soldiers , instead the politicians of that aresa who operated it themselves secretly .
The problem with ALLEGED issues where only generated to create an impact and argument . If that is the case , tanan unta bases sa kalibutan naay AIDS , CANCER , all kinds of AILMENTS ang mga locals .
This is basically the arguments presented when they had the votings in 1991 to kick them out of Subic . Actually its all GREED and not these " factors kuno " . All they wanted are more money that could have help repay our debt by the annual rent of the base and instead went to the deep pockets .
Regardless of what the real purpose of American soldiers here , its a FACT they are HELPING us in any way no matter what .

" A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. " - 2nd Amendment , Bill of Rights of the United States of America
true, but then it was let go. which supports the view that it is less important than the Okinawa base.
every case can be viewed as an isolated case; same thing with the misbehavior of some US servicemen when they were deployed here and everywhere else. each is regarded as an isolated case as statistics are then shown that the locals commit more crimes than US service men do, etc. rape, harassment, shooting people and 'mistaking' them for pigs, the list goes on.
well yes, there are civilian contractors involved for maintaining the bases, for sure. but these mostly are very low key; utilities and ground maintenance maybe. we do not have many qualified locals that can serve as technicians for warplanes, warships and tanks.
evidently Olongapo became a red light district simply because the locals wanted it, but because the demand was there. eliminate the demand (as what was done a decade ago) and the city got over being the center of the flesh trade.
nobody is saying that all abandoned US bases had toxic chemicals left out. it's just that Clark and Subic had those when they left. the US General Accounting Office (investigative body of the US Congress) even concurred about it. an article from Greenpeace from way back early 2000's, and a related article from Inquirer in 2008.
an american may see it that way. someone who might have been grievously affected by their presence and what they have done, will see it differently.
the questions to ask are what kind of help, what price and what conditions are there to get that 'help'. is our perceived need for this 'help' something real or something that we were just convinced of taking.
