Red Bull just got Purefoods in their last game in the eliminations. Purefoods tied with Sta. Lucia at 12-6 at the top but retained the number 1 spot after beating the Realtors twice in the eliminations.

Carlo Sharma of Red Bull and Jondan Salvador of Purefoods engaged in a fight in the fourth quarter. Sharma has turned himself into the Barako's main bruiser, taking over the spot left by Enrico Villanueva.hehehe. Sharma and Salvador's status for their team's next games is still uncertain.

Red Bull is the only team Purefoods wasn't able to beat in the eliminations and they have the chance to face each other in a best of 7 series if Red Bull will get past the number 5 team in a best of 3 series.

Meanwhile in the other game, Asi Taulava had the last laugh in their first encounter against his former team. Coca-Cola defeated the Talk 'N Text PhonePals and dealt Asi's former team a double blackeye. (1) With Asi Taulava surging lately, the PhonePals might be having some second thoughts of letting him go and (2) Coca-Cola's win denied Talk 'N Text an automatic quarterfinals entry and will be facing each other again for a knockout game in the wildcard phase. Taulava is hopeful and confident that they'll knock Talk 'N Text out in the wildcard.

Sonny Barrios: the 7th Commisioner of the PBA.

    BREAKING IMPASSE
    PBA promotes Barrios to commissioner

    GAMES FRIDAY (Cuneta Astrodome)
    4:50 p.m. -- Coca-Cola vs Talk ‘N Text
    7:20 p.m. -- Air21 vs Barangay Ginebra

MANILA, Philippines -- Faced with another deadlock, the Philippine Basketball Association’s board of governors on Thursday decided to promote Renauld “Sonny” Barrios from officer-in-charge to commissioner for the rest of the league’s 33rd season.

The decision to elevate Barrios came after the board failed to come up with the required six votes to break the deadlock between commissioner aspirants lawyer Chito Salud and self-made telecommunications executive Lambert Ramos.

At the same time, the board decided to speed up the process of turning the league into a corporation and to fill up various positions in the organization in July.

Barrios, the 60-year-old former deputy commissioner for 18 years who was plucked from retirement to serve as OIC at the start of the season, thus became the seventh top honcho of Asia’s first play-for-pay league, replacing the resigned Noli Eala.

Tapped by the PBA board for his expertise and because he had no ambitions of being commissioner, Barrios was originally tasked to run the league until a new commissioner was named.

A graduate of Ateneo de Manila University, Barrios thus joined the likes of founding commissioner Leo Prieto, lawyer Rudy Salud, the late Mariano Yenko, Rey Marquez, the late Jun Bernardino and Eala.

PBA turns to Barrios – again

ALMOST SIX years after he was ignored in his bid to become commissioner and six months after his appointment as Officer-In-Charge (OIC), the PBA Board of Governors now wants Renauld "Sonny" Barrios to become the league’s seventh commissioner.

This was unanimously decided by the board yesterday after a round of voting failed to produce a clear winner between lawyer Chito Salud and marketing expert and telecommunication executive Lambert Ramos for the post of PBA commissioner.

The board, chaired by Red Bull’s Tony Chua, gave Barrios until this weekend to decide whether or not to accept the position.

"All of us came to a decision that’s unanimous. Mr. OIC Barrios would become the commissioner until end of season, until July," Chua said in a press conference immediately after the board meeting.

The meeting, held at the PBA Office in Libis, Quezon City, lasted about three hours and was attended by the 10 board members.

"The board thought that this is the best solution for the league," Alaska representative Joaqui Trillo said.

According to Chua, the board did not vote on who should be commissioner. But sources who requested not to be identified because they were not authorized to disclose what transpired during the meeting, said the board voted not only once but three times in an attempt to break the impasse.

Ex-PhonePals Mark Telan and Asi Taulava dealt Talk 'N Text it's biggest blow in the season so far, eliminating them in the conference. Telan hit 10/15 FGs while Taulava, hitting only 5/21 from the field, finished with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Meanwhile, Air21 eliminated the defending champions Ginebra, 119-110. Wynne Arboleda scored career-high 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Ranidel de Ocampo added 29 points to knock the defending champions out.

For the 22nd straight season, a new All-Filipino champion will be crowned. The last time a team won an All-Filipino title for two consecutive seasons was Great Taste way back during the 1984 and 1985 seasons.

Air21 and Coca-Cola will be on a knockout match.
