Let's see...

There are different types of techniques (jutsu-s). I know at least eight but they are usually classed only under 3 kinds: ninjutsu, taijutsu or genjutsu.

The ones that require hand seals are called Ninjutsu. Think of them of something similar to spells. They usually require chakra. They usually can be copied by the Sharingan. Examples are that water dragon thingy Kakashi summoned to knock out Zabuza.

Ninjutsu-s usually require just hand seals. It's like an incantation but instead of saying it, you sign language it. This is why Orochimaru could no longer perform Ninjutsu when the Third sealed off his hands. Orochimaru is a bit crazy about Ninjutsu. Wants to collect them. ^^ This why he's after Sasuke. He wants the Sharingan's ability to copy/memorize Ninjutsu hand seals.

Taijutsu (Physical Techniques), on the other hand, do not require hand seals or chakra. Physical exertion lang gyud na. For some reason, gi look down man ang Taijutsu. Ninjutsu is preferred.

Then, you have Genjutsu. (Hallucination or Illusion Techniques)

Then, there are Sealing Techniques called ?Fuuin-jutsu?.

Curse Seals as well... ?Juin-jutsu?

Then there are techniques called Hiden. In the character file, the examples shown are Shikamaru's Shadow Freeze, Chou's Multi-size, Shino's insect clone & that stretching technique shown by one of Kabuto's teammates during the Chuunin exam.

Kin-Jutsu - forbidden techniques.

Then, last but definitely not the least, ^^ Kekkei Genkai (Bloodline Limits).

The nins that move around a lot or use a lot of hand movements, such as Rock Lee and Neji (parang Taichi ), they are good at Taijutsu. In the character file, there's a diagram which measures their level of expertise in certain forms of jutsu.

On the other hand, if the nins just tend to just stay put & don't use their hands much like the Sand nins - Gaara, Temari & Kankurou, they depend more on ninjutsu.

There are also weapon masters such as Tenten (Rock Lee & Neji's teammate). Plus you have summoners. Then there are medical techniques.

ok..more about the rasengan then:

i think this techniques is very energy efficient.. since it's all about chakra control. The chakra is being molded into a sphere, what comes into contact with the enemy is what is lost. Chidor however has chakra flying all over the place.

Hmm, I think the rasengan itself will make contact. What's destructive is the swirl of chakra within the sphere.

chidori is definitely gonna at the lossing side against rasengan(like saskue hhahahaha), rember what jiraya said " it could kill saskue" after their sort of battle in the hospital roof
